Interested in purchasing one of two Scott receivers. One has 7591, the other 7189. Which in your opinion has better sound quality and why?
Thanks.
Best,
Dave

I love the sound of the el84/7189. It's one of the reasons I searched high and low for a 399.
One mug,To me it is one of the best looking pieces of gear! A guy on that auction site has what appears to be a beauty for $950! Don't see them often but Wow!
Best,
Dave
Ps just looked it's gone!

I sure don't see many, let alone in decent condition. I just checked the bay. I see a 399 for a "bin" of 725. Here's a picture of mine to keep you hungry.
One mug,
Absolutely gorgeous! On the other hand incredibly cruel! :0)
Saw that one for $725. Will keep an eye on it.
Beautiful piece you have there.
Best,
Dave
Thanks, hope you can find one that pleases you.
Don't mean to be cruel :0( ...(I did see your smiley face so I know you're kidding)
Do want you to stay hungry, but not starving. If your appetite starts to go away, let me know and I'll post another picture of mine with the matching 335 multiplex adapter.
Well going to get some of the magic this weekend, going to finally fire up the 299b and 350a.
That should placate me for a while!
Best,
Dave
After 20 years with a Mac C22 and MC225 I now find that I prefer my rebuilt Scott 299A with NOS GE 7189A's.
I remember back when I partially rebuilt the 299 I was blown away and had the thought of selling the Mac stuff but kept on using it because it was "better."
Now that I have a smaller listening room with smaller efficient EV speakers the Scott floats my boat with it's warm naturalness.
The 225 kicks butt and I also like my EL34 Scott 272 but there's something about the 7189 based 299 thats very appealing.
At one time I had a Dyna SCA35 and that sounded sweet as well so I'd have to conclude the 6BQ5 family does have it's merrits.
Dave,
Where on earth did you finda matched quad of NOS 7189?
And if don't mind my asking, cost?
Best,
Dave
Years ago when I actually had disposable income I bought quite a few spare quads from Asylum Sponsor Jim McShane for the equipment I had at the time because I had a feeling supply and demand would eventually affect the prices.
I'm happy I did when I see the prices now and how scarce some NOS tubes are.
You can find NOS USA 7189's but anything close to a moderate match may be $200 or more a quad.
There's always some on that big auction site for less BUT you may need to buy a bunch to get one reasonably matched quad so that's a crap shoot at best.
I feel better buying from a dealer that actually matches tubes under operating condition voltage using more than one criteria.

Yes I agree with you on the purchase from dealer. Jim advised me on tubes while my 299 was out being recapped. Two of the 7189 were good one ok, and the last on its way.
So he recommended the Russian equivalent! They are not even broken in yet!
Best,
Dave
It might be possible to design a bad-sounding 6BQ5/7189/EL84 amp, but I haven't heard one. The 7591 puts out about twice the power, but to my ears the 7189 is a far better sounding tube. Scott's 7189 amps are especially good.
Both are excellent tube receivers and if you have really efficient speakers, the 7189s are probably the better choice..Are you looking at the 340A or 340B in the 7591 receiver? The Scott 399 is the 7189 version.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
I believe it is the A, but I really lust after the 399!
Best,
Dave
