I have searched the archives and it seems the Tung Sol is a good candidate. Any other suggestions? I found a pair of older coke bottle 6550 Shuguangs but understand they can have reliability issues but sound great.
The amp is a Triode Corp. TRK3488 a 10 watt single ended pentode kit from Japan that can use EL34/6CA7/6550/KT88 tubes. It is surprisingly good.
I have Shuguang EL34B, JJ 6CA7, and Penta KT88's.
Follow Ups:
in a very decent home-brew PP amp a few weeks ago.
Bettered two differing quads of NOS TS 6550, both solid dark grey plate and three hole plate versions.
The PSVANE KT-88 also bettered everything else thrown at the amp.
I have been using the Tung Sols for a year or more. Seem to be OK.
I have replaced a couple of them with 1500-2000 hrs(best guess).
They are more robust than the Gold Lion KT88 RI though not as exciting to listen to. Certainly better than EH KT88.

Do you have the vintage TS 6550 or the reissue TS 6550?
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
hmm... i am wondering. the PSVANEs look exactly same as the TREASURE Z KT88 except the coloured base. i estimate, they sound identically. right?Nunki

Nunki, the tubes may look the same but they are indeed different.

Do the PSvanes sound better from what you've heard? I was debating whether or not to spring for s quad, being I have a quad of treasures and if the PSvanes are indeed better,I will buy some.

Mike, there has not been enough feedback for us to know yet. I don't think the dust has settled from the separation from Shuguang.
I did speak to a guy that has used the new Psvane 6CA7 grey glass and he was thrilled.
What do you know about the 'Canadian' Fuller tubes?
I've been using Fuller KT88s for a few years in my Copland CTA-505 with very good results. Previously I've favoured GE 6550s and new production Gold Lions. But the Fuller tubes appear to remain more stable in my amp and sound good. The Copland is hard on output stage tubes.
Notably, the tubes which have the greatest impact on sound in my Copland are the input stage and the phast splitters.

"Notably, the tubes which have the greatest impact on sound in my Copland are the input stage and the phast splitter."
Same here.
That is true in all amps for the most part because the highest amplification is accomplished in the driver and phase splitter stages and this is why they are the most critical sonically.

Agreed, and there is usually one particular driver tube that is the catalyst that brings it all together.

There is a little story behind that..Shuggie was making the Treausres in their plants and the story is,a few of the workers got pissed off because they didn't want to share in the profits on these basically hand assembled tubes made of selective parts. This group of employees said screw it,and decided to open their own little plant and build the tubes in their new facility with Shuguang still supplying the materials.
The Shuguang Treasures are very nice..I love my quad and I would imagine the PSvane may even be more refined than the Treasures.

Thanks for this info -- I am the proud new owner of an MC275-VI bought on closeout and would like to try a few of the leading candidates once it's broken in. I have the Gold Lion KT88s and have heard good things about the Psvanes. Have to say, sounds pretty good as is, though.
best,

Closeout?
Was it a couple grand off?I wouldn't mind a new one myself.I have a vintage MC275. That Mc275 MK6 is of the best sounding amps made today..I would easily put it in the top five amps sonically. The GL KT88s in the Mc275 are a very complementary match.I was very surprised when Mcintosh didn't use the Genelex KT88 as original equipment on the reissues, being the Genelex was original equipment on the vintage amps.
Later it came to me and then I confirmed my theory and it was correct after talking to Mcintosh engineering. When the Mc275 was first reissued in the mid 90s,there was no Genelex reissue and the best KT88 at that time was supposedly the Svetlana wing C.They had a long standing contract with St Petersburg Svetlana to supply these tubes but now I think they will be using the Genelex.
The voltage amp and phase inverter in the Mcintosh amps are the most influential on the sound from my experience.

Hi,Yes -- dealer moving out of McIntosh and had a few pieces left, including this MC275-VI new in box. I couldn't stop myself, fortunately.
Thanks for the tip on the GLs and input tubes. I'm going to let this cook for a week in order to get used to its sound as stock and then roll some of the tubes. I have the GL KT88s and can borrow Winged-C 6550s, and I have some NOS AX7s and AT7s somewhere.
It is an amazing-sounding amp. I've tried it with a few speakers and it works beautifully with all of them, including the little LS50s, which seem twice the size with the Mac. Very different from my Rogue and absolutely silent -- no tube noise, AC hum, nuttin.
Back to the music!
