I am looking for a laid back 6DJ8 tube for an amp that is too forward in its presentation. My home office system speakers are only 6' from my listening position and a forward presentation does not work for me. Any suggestions?

I think Mullard E188cc have a warmer sound. If you look around, you might find some RTC labelled, which usually costs lessl they are the same tube.Like Wood1 said, it usually depends on the preamplifier you are using.
With ARC, Siemens, in forward Stages, and Mullard in the rear will be detailed, yet warm. You could go with all Mullard tubes; however, the original, made in Germany, Audio Research tubes were quite nice, and Mullard gives it a bit more warmth, less forward.
I like Amperex, the Holland made tubes sound best to me, then the white PQ, Or Jan and Usn-Cep; they will be 7308, and are all the same Amperex Tubes. They seem brighter to me than Mullard, yet they have a lush sound. Are very popular with audiophiles. Most of all, the early D getter type, these are most sought after. Look for Philips, the SQ type E188cc, these are also a warm tube.
Look for Dario Miniwatt and RTC; they are also very nice and used to be less costly than Amperex, but now it seems all tube lovers caught on and they sell high today. You are most safe buying from a tube dealer, yet you can save money looking on eBay, but beware, you may end up with a fake, or a worn out tube, be sure they are tested! Best is to go with sellers who have long track records, and near perfect feedback.

The vintage GE's are worth a try. I use them in my phono preamp and they are on the laid back side with my system. Plus they won't break the bank!
