I use two sets of the E34L blue glass and used to have a 5AR4 and none of them have been anything less than delightful. I am aware of the problems however.
I also have a blown Genelex KT88 and these seem to be the darlings of the board. But I realize that I am a sample of but one.

Make that a sample of two. I have far more problems with the Gold Lion tubes than any other brand other than Psvane.
The bad rap on JJ tubes comes from a few people who buy their tubes from one reputable dealer who is not a JJ dealer.
I purchased over $5000.00 worth of tubes last year, not including replacements by manufacturers, and the least troublesome were JJ.
As for the Telefunkens, don't knock them until you've tried them. There isn't one person posting here who has actually used them (including me)

You correct about not having heard them. I look forward to real world data and experience on their new boutique line. But JJ has a lot of work to win me over.
I've gotten some that weren't good from Eurotube. Can't get much more authorized than that.
I think there was a period of time when Eurotube was not doing proper testing at the factory. I have had no issues with the recent JJ power tubes I have used and depending on the circuit they can sound quite good.
I did not mean to disparage the quality of the tubes, but I find the use of the great names of the past on modern Eastern Block tubes to be deceitful and just plain crappy.
I own, and use, many of the Genelex reissues, the use of the name just makes me cringe. My problem, I know.
JJ definitely knows how to make good tubes. Older production runs were fine. I suspect your blue glass E34Ls are of an older "vintage". JJ's E34L, when made with care, is superb. For quite some time, JJ's E88CC was THE value in 6DJ8 family variants.
Unfortunately, the will to manufacture a quality product has be absent, over the last few years. ;> ( JJ's Octal based tubes became no better than inconsistent. The E88CC became unreliable. Numerous other examples have been noted by AA "inmates".
Take the money and run seems to be JJ's current operating theme. A truly sad situation.

....are far superior to todays offerings. The Tesla tubes that I have are superior to the JJ, Ei used to make some great tubes, ditto Tungsram. SED as well had excellent, reliable tubes, which it seems are now but a memory, though reports on the current KT120 are very good. And it was not too long ago that Cetron made a marvelous, affordable, 300B right here in the US of A.

The find the new PSVANE Treasure stuff is superior to all but the very best tubes of long ago. I always found the Cetron the be the worst sounding 300B I have ever owned. Maybe we have very different ears or you haven't heard the best of the new production stuff.
Aren't transistors alien technology?
If it is a 'Treasure', it's a Shuguang.
Which do you prefer?
