I've heard a lot of those and really like the WWII-era Ken-Rad VT-231s and ESPECIALLY the Tung-Sol roundplate VT-231. I used them in the Voltage-gain positions of Antique Sound Lab Hurricanes. The TSRP had everything good for me and then a touch of warmth (NOT darkness which means less treble energy). The KR was almost as good and was my fave until I ran into a TSRP. I bought this stuff maybe 10 years ago, and I have no idea what they sell for now. I do know that they, just like land, are not made any more, so I'd expect to see 'new' TSRPs for over $200...the KRs, less than that.

I have had every 6SN7/12SN7GT made. I listened to them for years in headphone amps both as input and output tubes. Where you could really hear the difference was when I used the 6/12sn7 as the input tube.
I always liked the Ken Rad black glass, the tall bottle clear glass Tung Sol early 1950's 6SN7 version (not the GTB), Hytron tall bottle 6SN7 and the Sylvania VT-231.
I found the TS BG to brittle and raw in the treble for my tastes. RCA gray glass tubes were to rich and slow sounding for my taste .... to much character. GE's were nothing special.
If I were looking for the best sounding and best priced 6SN7 today I would get some tube socket adapters and use the Sylvania tall bottle 7N7 and the 7AF7. Just be careful you get actual GT versions of the 7N7 tube. There are a lot of 7N7's out there that are the later GTB style plates which do not sound nearly as good. Any 7AF7 I have seen uses the short bottle GT style plates and this tube sounds excellent.
You have had every 6SN7 ever made? Hard to take your comments seriously after a claim like that. Many like the Ken Rad black glass but as a driver in my amp I have always found them average. The Tung Sols after the round plates but before the tall bottle GTB, including the "mouse-ears" are all good sounding tubes. I neglected to add the tall bottle Hytron to my list but it does belong, the fastest, cleanest sounding 6sn7 in my amp but a little thinner than some of the others. Agree that none of the GE are anything special, same with all RCA except for the VT-231 and redbase 5962---these are great if your system is a little bright or you need all little more tone for jazz or vocals.
How about any USA 6SN7GT ever made ??? ... which is what I meant. That includes the many Sylvania's through the years metal base, brown base, black base, short bottle, tall bottle, bad boys etc... and some GTA's. RCA gray glass, smoked glass and clear glass GT's. Ken Rad black glass and clear glass JAN and consumer versions. Tung Sol black glass, clear glass tall bottle, mouse ears and the tall bottle GTB. Hytron tall bottle GT .... your description was perfect. I love that tube. Numerous bland GE's and some black plate Westinghouse that did not appear to be rebranded.
