Haha, they have sometimes complained. Some are just surprised. Most of my high-volume tests are done in a detached unit, and I wear headgear to protect myself. The 3-cab 400 PS testrun was felt across 15ft of foundation over on each side hahahahaha!
I've learned it's distortion that hurts most and "loud" can depend on the head. Later Marshalls are just bananas and there's no taming their gain; they're always so BAM!-direct. The 67 Superbass, however, is much softer and smoother, far more pleasant in my opinion. Fenders get loud, but are easy to tame at louder volumes thanks to their clean character. You can dual in a TFL5000 cranked to 10 without tons of overpowering distortion. Just don't ask the same out of a BF Bassman lol. Doh! I wanna get decent mic's and record some of this stuff. It's no fun if you can't share it :(
If I had a dream guitar right now, it would be a Reverend PA-1 or something like it in that price range. I wanna toy around with soft jazzy tones :) and also bust out Stray Cats tones!

Follow Ups:
One of the folk's on the Fender Board posted these photos. His lineup and his Dad's 1951 P-bass, with receipt. The hum from the SUNN 300T is enough to kill at close range.BTW... how is the maintenace on that Fender 400PS? Ever plug a guitar into it, just for giggles? Do you have the original folded horn speakers for that Goliath amp?
Thanks!
BTW... sorry to OP, for the hi-jack.

Totally didn't answer two of your questions last time! Whoops!
Thinking on the low-end again, it's a tough tell... It's a strange beast. Using that 3-way setup is like building one huge mono super-speaker, each cab taking the same 145-200W (pending tubes and biasing), with each of the drivers is more or less full range, accented according their size and spec. The result I find is a powerfully-clean, super-coherent presentation of the sound.
There is no doubt a weight and authority to the 400 PS. When I say the low-end isn't super low, it's that it doesn't come out focused like more traditional bass rigs I encounter these days. It has a VERY solid sound, with power with just the right amount of compression, and I find it doesn't suffer that "over-separation" due to crossover setups. It just produces an honest, powerful sound without ever becoming harsh in any frequency, while still retaining a well-balanced touch sensitivity for the player. Plus the sustain is crazy.
And, it DOES actually make for a decent jazzy sounding guitar amp; the normal behaves much like a cleaned up Twin Reverb preamp. Again, just depends on cab choice. With a guitar, 10s and 12s are a must. Otherwise, I find it would risk sounding recessed, especially with 15's and 18's. That solid low-end will overpower the E, practically leaving you with a mini-bass in hand. Overall, guitar sounds more "ambient", a soft but very present sound.
As for maintenance, sigh... Out of the 5 owned, 2 are functional, 2 are assumed in need of servicing and have been left in storage. The last is a complete rust job and donor project for Mercury Magnetics to reverse engineer the output and 3 chokes. Servicing them is... unpleasant. An adequate replacement thus far has been the JJ KT88, but I'm looking into other options. The JJ's make the PS sound relaxed, cool, and jazzed out. GE 6550's give it a midrange magic, great for slap bass and picking. The difference is pretty substantial.
Picking a good tube is tough. The PS runs about 650V at the plate, and draws lots of screen current at 350V-ish. I'm wondering about the Gold Lion and Shuguang KT88SC (Pref Series from Tube Store), but it's a gamble when we're talking about the PS. I have high hopes with the KT120/KT150 if I could get some lower heater-current tested sextets (!$!$!$!$!$!).

A guy on the Fender Board claims only two 6550 type will last more than a few gigs. Where he gigs is beyond me... but I bet you'd hear it two states over.
Only original Tungsol or GE (Owensboro variety). Even the 6L6GC has to be a tough tube. He uses NOS 7581A.
Thanks!
Hmm, thats a beautiful bass. Man, check that price! $150!! Wow... Price parities suck haha
As for the 400PS, I have actually tried the folded horn cab. My brother actually built an oversized version of Fender's (deeper in dimension) with a JBL K151. From there, we paired it with a quad chambered 8x10 loaded with Jensen mod50's, and a 2x15 with some other JBLs. Outrageous.... the low end out of that 18 is not SUPER low (power thing, id say), but it has spectrum and depth, its not compressed and focused in certain frequencies. With the other cabs filling in the mids and highs, and filling the SPL factor, it's indescribable. You feel the notes in your vocal chords, not just your body or your head. The amp at full power has an appreciable " blast zone".

I love the Time Electronics page on this behemoth. Esp the FAQ on what you need to setup the amp. And consequences of not doing it correctly. And the bit about Ed Jahns.

Koerner is a holy grail of information. Last I spoke to him, however, he unfortunately hasn't been doing too well. I want to meet him in person soon and perhaps pry some details and historical facts about anything and everything.
As for the 400 PS using 6550's, they're GE 6550A's.
