Anyone have experiance with these. The Philips miniwate 6v6 also has reportage of having vg bass and good sound. Tweaker
Follow Ups:
GE made 7408 tubes with huge, boxy gray plates.
They look like 7591 tubes?
The bass response from these tubes have to be heard, to be believed?
Have you heard all the reported bass champ 7408 tubes? Canadian Westinghouse 7408 with one report of being somewhat recessed, you have heard the GE 7408, and the Harmon Kardon= Sylvanis 7408. A combo of deep clear bass, forward somewhat romantic midrange , fat but not bright highs that do not exaggerate cymbols and don't exaggerate hiss, somewhat rolled off is ok. The Philips miniwatt 6v6 may fit there also?? The ultimate in speed and clarity is not my major goal. Forward, musical,3D, intimate, not bright. Is this too much to ask for a 6v6? The Shuguang, I'm told is modeled after the GE, supposedly, and it does have good bass,a very decent tube but I am looking for an improvement. Thanks, Tweaker
I don't have the money to tube roll dozens of different 6V6 tubes.
One of my favorite 6V6 tubes, are the old 1950's black glass Tung-Sol 6V6GT tubes.
They do NOT have the bass response, of the more modern GE 7408 tube.
However from top-to-bottom, they are probably a better balanced tube.
I have a pair of the Philips/Pope branded 6V6 from Upscale and they sound wonderful but I would not call them bass champs. You may be getting all the bass you amp is capable of from the tubes you have already rolled. You can go nuts and broke chasing rainbows. Been there B4.
Once again and for the last time, different tubes have different bass responses and there are a few reports of bass champs. The Canadian Westinghouse 7408, The GE 7408 mentioned by the elusive but surfaced gearhunter and the HK-Sylvania 7408. If I was not already crazy would I be HERE!? Being poor is what I am trying to avoid by getting experienced peoples opinion on this site. Gearhunter seems to be one of main people who have looked into this matter. Also, there is more than one way to skin a cat. One commercial interconnect I tried on this 6v6 amp had incredible bass, deep and clear, to the point it sounded like I put a subwoofer in the system. unfortunately it had major flaws. This amp and certain tubes... can and eventually will have much improved bass. Tweaker
Good luck chasing rainbows. A 6V6 amp is not going to give you SS bass no matter what tube you use.

You have a nice 6V6 amp. What speakers are you driving? I know -0- about 6U8 tubes.
way up high in the expenditure department I have found two input tubes in the 5670 and 6u8a category I like a whold lot. You are very correct that you just have to hear for yourself. Took me at least 6 to 8 or so tubes before I could (maybe settle). I'll get into the 6u8a discussion if you need some info on this subject, Setdude, I'm using the only acoustic suspension speaker without a metal dome tweeter that could go below 50 that I could fine without building my own. Those days are over for now. It's the Cambridge Soundworks Model 6. Very good for what it is. Will be much better after I spend $2000 to find the holy grail of 6v6. Tweaker
this one is easy: I have done the same study on 6v6s as the gentleman above on 12au7....
and the verdict is 5992 by Bendix, buy a significant margin...
With RCA 6v6gty.... not too far behind....
with GE and Sylvania at the bottom
and Raytheon CBS brimar in the middle....
the surprise is of course Tungsol Reissue neck and neck , but perhaps a hair behind the RCA.....
CHINESE not in the same league strange....ok

I wish it was. Other peoples opinions are often way off from what I like or perceive. The 5992 is to rich for my blood. Some say the RCAs are great for guitar but have muddy bass. I find the TSRI, while extreamely clear, fast, focused it is imho very bass shy, low midrange shy, and thus with out sonority, shall we say , soul. There have been a number of reports on the great bass of 3 different 7408 models... Easy It would be easy if I had them all to test. Tweaker
FWIW.....................................
There is a crossover mod for the CSW model 6 speaker, in the October 2001 issue of Audioxpress Magazine.
The word is, that it is a GOOD upgrade.
The bad news is.....it will VOID your warranty.
Tubeguy1954 posted this:
About six years ago I purchased an integrated SET amp that used 12AU7s for preamp section. Obviously I wanted the "BEST" 12AU7 I could get for this amp. I wasn't that knowledgable at that time on the 12AU7 family, as I am now, so I asked the same question you just did, i.e., " What's the best 12AU7 tube?" As you can imagine I got the usual response buy: Amperex, Mullard, Telefunken, Siemens or Valvo.
Not knowing better, I quickly tried these different suggested tubes. However much to my surprise I wasn't satisfied with what I heard. I soon realized it was my ears I had to make happy, not anyone elses. To that end I set off to try almost every variation of the 12AU7 tube I could find: (12AU7A, 12AU7WA, 5814, 5814A, 5963, 6067, 6189, 6680, 6CC40, 7489, 7730, CK5814, CV491, ECC82, E82CC, ECC802, ECC802S and M8136) Not only did I try all these different variations, I tried as many different manufactuer's versions of these variations as well by: (Amperex, Brimar, Cifte, Electro Harmonics, GE, Mazda, Mullard, Phillips, RCA, RFT, RT, Siemens, Sylvania, Telefunken, Tesla, Tungsram & Tungsol) Nor did I stop there, because I was looking for the very best, I also tried every different color (black, gray and chrome/silver/nickel) and type of plate (both long/short/box/ribbed etc)
What I discovered was this. The tubes so many other people cited as being "THE BEST" simply weren't when used in my amp! I found it was actually the Mazda 6189/E82CC/12AU7WA "chrome plate" that sounded the best ---in my amp. It was much better than the highly touted Siemans "chrome-plate" or the much loved Amperex "bugle boys" or any Mullard I could find, yes even the 10M. The Mazda's were followed quite closely by the East German RFT 12AU7 yellow letter "mickey mouse ears." These two tubes blew all the other 12AU7's away when used in my amp , period.
What I'm getting at is the ONLY people who might actually honestly be able to help you would be:
1) people who own your amp --they know what the different tubes sound like in that amp.
2) people who listen to music you listen to --if you listen to New Age and another listens to Heavy Metal you're probably looking for different sonic qualities in a tube and every other component.
3) people who listen for what you listen for in music --even if you listen to the same music if one person focuses on soundstaging and you focus on PRaT, you might prefer different tubes.
Basically, you'll need to discover for yourself what's "THE BEST" 12AU7-type tube for you, in your amp, when you're listening to the music you love. Trust me on this, NO TUBE sounds the same in every amp. That may not help a lot but at least it's honest...
I'll add that the rare = expensive tubes are not always the best sounding in yours or my system. You have to experiment and sometimes a run of the mill tube can be the 'silver bullet'.
Just substitute 6V6 for 12AU7. I hope it helps.
