In my Hifiman EF5 headphone amp, I've found that both the RFT and the RCA Clear Top 12AU7 have advantages.
The RFT is just really, really special -- for its extended and gorgeous highs. It's a good match for my somewhat dark Audeze LCD-2 headphones.
However, the Clear Top has a warmer overall sound and a great midrange. It also seems more balanced. By comparison the RFT is a bright and somewhat lean tube.
In this particular amp, I really need the sweet highs of the RFT -- the Clear Top is just not acceptable after hearing the RFT -- the highs of the Clear Top seem harsh. But I don't want to give up the warm sound of lower-pitched instruments through the Clear Top.
Any ideas for a tube that combines the best of both?
Follow Ups:
Two RCA cleartops exist. Straight cut & crescent cut top micas. GE 5814A 5-Star are warm with a crisp top end. The 5814 is an improved 12AU7, draws 50 ma more heater current at 6.3 volts.
I have these in my VAC Preamp and prefer it to Tele, RCA, and Mullard
I use a trio of Amperex tubes in my Jadis DA-60. They are a special versioin of the tube, the 7316. I think the other Heerlen 12AU7s might have enough warmth and still give you the soaring highs your after. Unfortunately you have to buy some. As I said th 7316 variant is special and very expensive but some of the "regular" 12AU7s should be less expensive and still have the Philips Holland sound.
