I've been rolling tubes in mine off and on for ten years, and I've come right back to where I started, the designer's recommended 12ax7 in all three tube positions. In the past I've posted enthusiastically about an au7 in V3, and and 5751 in V1, but if it was ever the case that these tubes sounded better it was likely because my overall system was much less resolving than it is now, and those unorthodox tubes perhaps made up for the lack of resolution in some way by distorting the frequency response of the phono stage. As to tube manufacturer, the best I've found at the price I'm willing to pay are EI.

At one point the "Silver Bullet" was a good choice for certain applications given its low price. How do you feel now that the price is higher?

At $30-40 currently for NOS I still consider them good value given they are so much better than the basic ax7s around such as JJ, EH, Sovtek etc. I haven't tried the new premium current manufacture tubes such as Gold Lion or Psvane which are around the same price as the NOS EI, but I'm suspicious and suspect marketing hype. I don't see how manufacturers have suddenly discovered the secret of the NOS tubes.
Ok, what I understand then is to stick with the original tubes.
But since I got a used unit, I don't have the stock tubes.
Do you know where I can get the EI ones.
I'm currently trying the new 12AX7 Mullard re-issues from Jim McShane in my phono preamp, and comparing them to the Sovtek 12AX7-LPS. I like what I hear so far.

My recommendation is to stay with 12ax7s, but not necessarily the original stock ones. If you have all ax7s now, or with the JJs on the way, I would stay with them for a while and get used to the sound. Then, if you want to experiment or change the sound in a particular direction, try EIs or Mullards, or whatever other suggestions come your way.
I don't think the original poster was asking about using different tubes.I think he was asking what brand 12ax7 to use.
As a general recommendation, I vote for NOS, Mullard long plate.
I have no experience with the EAR 834P.
