this is confusing...how can the same exact tube have so many different numbers ??
One reason is that Europe had it's own numbering system and the USA had it's own.
Examples are the ECC81/12at7, ECC82/12au7 and the ECC83/12ax7.

Musical Fidelity X-cans stock tube is 6922 how will a eecc88 change the sound ?
You can have the same tube made by a different manufacturer or a nos vs a present day tube again of the same type and they can sound different and usually do.

It the same frickin tube. How can the sound be any different?!?
Not everyone in the world knows that a 6922 and an E88CC are the same tube. Someone posts on this forum asking for assistance and instead gets smart ass comments. Really helpful!

Thank You Sir
Yes...lots of A-holes on this site !
This hobby used to be fun !
It can still be fun. Don't let anyone ruin it for you. 6DJ8/ECC88, 6922/E88CC and 7308/E188CC will all work fine in your headphone amp. Depending on the circuit, the generally less expensive and easier to find 6DJ8 might sound better. Generally speaking, the Amperex and Mullard 6DJ8/ECC88 are warmer and more relaxed while the Siemens and Telefunken are leaner, more detailed and have more high frequency extension. Toshiba, Matsushita and Tesla ECC88's are very nice sounding too, in my experience. Have FUN!!!

so then a 6dj8, 6922, ecc88 are all the same tube ?
A good overview of the situation...
good luck

If cutting out the middleman lowers the price, why are we paying the government to stand between us and the markets?
It is spelled out in the above link. It also happens to be my favorite tube in this family. Hint it is usually referred to by its BVA CV number, should you not want to read the above link though.
