I've looked in archives and can't find this question asked since 2006. I checked with Jim McShane and he doesn't have any. Suggestions where I could find a WE396a or recommendations on alternatives for MHDT Havana DAC?
Much appreciated.
Bob
I think I have some. Would you like me to take a look?

I bought a D-getter and a newer cryo'ed WE396A (O getter?) from Brent Jesse. I've just put in the older D-getter and like it. Haven't tried the other. If you could send me your e-mail address I'll try to contact you.
Thanks,
Bob
Click on JSTRM above. That's my e-mail.
This guy from Jersey has the WE JW 396A and WE JW 2C51.I also beleive he has the very rare Bendix 6385.
Did anyone see the huge lot of these sell on Ebay two weeks ago. Supposedly from the estate of a former Western employee. Along with a bunch of other tubes, there were 126 Western WE396A, all in boxes. Auction got a little rich for my blood, and sold for several thousand. I believe a 5670 should work as a substitute, you might want to check and make sure. I have been prefering a RCA triple mica 5670, and most of the GE/JAN sound pretty good. I have rolled quite a few of these, and none of them sound too bad. I have not found a lot of difference between brands, compared to other tubes.
They're actually fairly common, as WE tubes go.
2C51 is the same tube.
If you're willing to modify the filament supply, also identical electrically is the WE407A (20/40v filament) - and dirt cheap. Easy to wire up for DC on the filament using a LM7820.
www.tubeworld.com has some listed.
