I am currently running my Quad ESL57īs with some Quicksilver amps that have Svetlana Winged C EL 34īs. They sound wonderful but I am thinking I could use a bit more warmth. I donīt want to lose the resolution, transparency and palpable images the Svetlanas help produce.
Is there an EL 34 anyone could recommend? Thanks ....
Here's my opinion on some other EL34's. I have not used old stock (afraid that if I like them they would be too costly) and I've been happy with the new Tung Sols. If you can bias, I also recommend mixing EL34 types to try to get closer to the sound you want.

Look for some Mullard XF2, sounds like what you are looking for in sound.
have the best balance, but at some sacrifice to the traditional mellow EL-34 mid-range. Of these two, the 6CA7 has the better mids. The KT77 has better bass and top end extension...based on the tubes I have used. Maybe the new Genelx KT77s have got it all; i have not heard them.
All the Red Lion KT-XX Genelex "re-issued" tubes have received a lot of praise on this forum.

I read it all the time.
After I get debt free my reward will be a quad of GL KT-77's for my stereo 120. Read that McShane? lol you'll know when I'm free!
I have had great luck with my JJ KT77s, for example, but prefer other tubes to the EL34 family. Many people have had problems with this tube and JM won't stock them.

Thanks for the info
When the time comes I'll be asking for recomendations
What kind of gain stage and phase inverter tubes are you running? Changing these may help the issue, more than the power tubes.BTW: if you are happy with the gain stage and phasse inverter tubes, I find that the 1990's vintage JJ E34L has a warmer midrange response. You need to bias the amp slightly hotter for this tube versus the Svetlana EL34 (15-20% hotter).

Fender--when you say to bias hotter--does that mean more bias (milliamps) or less? I have seen references both ways in this asylum.
Thanks
More idle wattage dissipation. So, more idle current at the same plate voltage. For example, I'd run the E34L at 40-45mA at 450VDC on an amp which runs an EL34 at 35-40mA, at same plate voltage.
