1980's Sylvania 5881 are electrically compatable but that is where the story ends as they are rebadged Philips US 6L6WGB - a pretty strong tube - but not terribly distinguished sonically. Those 1960's Tungsol 6L6WGB are true Tungsol 5881's, sonically excellent - they called them 6L6WGB for military ordering purposes.
One thing to note - the Philips 1980's 6L6WGB is under-rated electirically - it can handle a lot more than typical 5881 voltages. So if you have an amp that is really designed for a 6L6GC, or pushes the GB spec to the limits, it may be wiser to stick with the Philips mage GB's or seek out good 6L6GC's.
Yes. Though the manufacturer does not object against TS tubes, I suspect that Sylvania/Philips tubes and the stock big bottle Shuguang 5881 tubes are more robust than the TS, which might have been a reason for the blown fuse. Manually biased amps are much safer in this respect.
