I told my Boss that I would name my next project in his honor.
This ugly thing actually started life as a nice looking SE 6AR6 amp with nicely matched and painted xfmrs. It didn't sound very good, not bad but BOOOOOOORING. Next it was a SE 6L6. Nope, still not so goo.
Changed out a high impedance choke, not much better: and Changed the driver circuit 2X, a little better with 7B4.
Changed the output to 45; now it's starting to sound good, but still no cigar.
At last I changed out the output xfmr, a PP 6.6k Fischer with a cut and gapped core (and a nice metallic blue paint job). In went a Hammond 125.
Now the amp sounds really good, but looks wise, not so much........... It seems that I've rediscovered the DHT and good SE iron though.
"Unruly heap" is a good name for my friend, who took this gorgeous thing home to impress his wife. She'll love it.
Follow Ups:
Hi group, I am the receptor of the amp.
The story is I sold a lovely pair of 2a3 monoblocks and went solid state for a while.
A chip amp based on the lm3886.
Really pretty decent sound.
As I raved on about ss Paul was building this 45 amp.
Took it home yesterday.
A real eye opener, or should I say ear opener.
The sound stage opened up and the virtues of a good 45 set would be obvious to all but the deaf.
I'm back.
Forgive me for my transgressions.

SS can sound very good, but the effort and cost is high. IMO, tubes are the way to go, for the DIYer.
As the cost of #45s is large, those who have to control expenditures can use triode wired 6V6 family tubes. Short of the #45, a triode wired 6V6 family tube is about as good as it gets, in this power range.

Hi Paul,You now are now building about what I build !!
I use a mu of 100 input/driver tube, DCed to a Type 45. Are you direct coupled ??
If you want to contact me privately on the Forum mail service, I'd be glad to look over your build and see if there are some easy and NOT TOO EXPENSIVE things you can do, to get it to go even better.
Have fun listening, I am !!

Not direct coupled. Teflon cap coupled with 470K on the 45 grid. I like the DC stuff you've done and will probably build one in the vague future. The current bench (to do) list goes out past August.
Paul,
OK, good to know. Oh yes, that particular tube lineup ( 7B4 - 45 ) is MEANT to be DCed !!
You ain't heard "it" yet, at all !! You ( and William ) just heard " at it ".
Please send me your email address, and I will send you a write up I did, on such DC amps, 'will help a lot !! I am emailable Paul at drlowmu@gmail.com.
Jeff
There's nothing wrong with the hammond 125ese. It is probably the most under appreciated opt around. Good sound for not much money. I love them.
