I owned a pair some years back. If your pair is lacking then something is seriously wrong with them. One of the most neutral liner extended amps I owned after a rebuild. They may have lacked some bass but my speakers at the time did not have low bass anyway.
Follow Ups:
I personally like the small pentode power tubes. I've never heard a 6BQ5 amp that didn't sound halfway decent, for example. What I meant was that the Ampex units were designed for consoles, buried deep in the woodwork and, well, suffer a little in appearance.....
This is in diametric contrast to some of the Scott radios which have brilliant chrome ( not nickel) plating on the chassis and tube covers....
But again don't get me wrong here either. I heard a pair of modified IPC 807 amps that sounded so good I bought a pair despite their very industrial look and I own Quicksilvers, again very industrial ( where's the front ?)....
Of course my pair has mismatched outputs, probably not much of an issue, but the anal part of me put the pair on the side and kept looking for a matching set. The Triad catalogs I have seen have neither transformers listed.
I can see the original transformer as being made specifically for Ampex, but it would be nice to see the specs for both to get an idea of whether or not there are major differences. The replacement triad already, as I stated, has a lamination stack that is 1/4 inch longer...Hmmm... and the sticker on that transformer shows the secondary windings to spit the outputs so that ground lies between the 8 and 4 own taps (a la Audio Research some years ago, IIRC).
I am curious about both transformers, of course. I doubt if the original had the extra 4 ohm winding, for example. It may be better, but then I really wish I had a pair of either....
hope this explains my comment

That's what I suspected. I have one set of large Ampex outputs and the windings are, uhhhh...., definitely not familiar. In fact I am still puzzling out the various output taps.... Again been searching but to no avail.
Reputation as rated the Ampex iron as being very good, on par with the Peerless or even better, but trying to source information is like pulling Hen's teeth. Info is very, very hard to come by.
The Ampex amp with the replacement transformer has an S-144 but again little information can be gleaned from the Triad catalogs I have found.
Thank you , though, as it confirms a suspicion I had
I totally agree with you those amps are at best industrial in appearance. And they sound awful too. Wink wink..... nudge nudge.
Actually to be honest I done some powder coating on several old amps which came out beautifully. Don't know if I want to do that all over again.
