In Reply to: RE: Anyone know where i can get a 10v x 10A transformer? posted by DAK on July 26, 2015 at 11:13:07
A critical current choke I/P filter yields approx. 90% of the RMS voltage as DC. A 12 V. transformer and resistive tweaking would seem to be in order.
I dislike using parts at the very limit of their capabilities, as that makes for very poor reliability. With that in mind, a 100 VA trafo is not suitable. The next size up is 200 VA. Way better too much than not enough. AnTek's AS-2212 seems to meet the need.

has a 12 Volt 20 amp tranny for $86
I wouldn't recommend a single transformer for this. The OP isn't planning to regulate the supply. If one tube opens, the other will see a marked increase in filament voltage.

AnTek wants all of $32 for the 200 VA toroid. :> D Why spend almost 3X more?

thanx Stuie, I will check it out. regards, DAk
If you want a transformer that isn't made in China, I've pretty sure Hammond (and maybe Edcor) can provide what you need for this. There are also vintage NOS transformers on eBay from well-known companies like Stancor, Triad, etc.

toroid is not ideal because of the noise it passed according to Rod Colemans fillimant instructions. Split bobon?
Yes, toroids are wide bandwidth. You deal with the garbage riding on the AC mains by putting ferrite beads on primary side leads.

Hey, TK, I checked Hammond and they do have 10v transformers but I think I have to order it from the factory. I know Antique Electronics does not carry but maybe I can order thru Angela. I have been searching epay diligently and currently none are available. I was outbid recently on a pair as I did not realize that they are somewhat rare. I am in no rush so I will just bide my time. regards, Dak
You can't use a 10 VRMS trafo to get 10 VDC, when critical current choke I/P filtration is employed.
AFAIK, 11 VRMS secondary "iron" is not a stock item.
BTW, some "Hammond" items are now manufactured in China. It gets tougher and tougher to exorcise the Chinese "Boogeyman".
The current Chinese regime will not endure. Whether any of us will see it fall is another matter.

I do it routinely if the part is not for sale by one of their vendors. There is no cost penalty.
