I need to rebuild some voltage doublers in the near future. They're mostly in HK amps and receivers that I'll be resurrecting. For this purpose, I decided to research low ESR electrolytics. What I came up with are Panasonic EE series 105° general purpose aluminum electrolytics. The size I need is 220uF at 250V (part # EEU-EE2E221). Panasonic doesn't list the actual ESR, but the caps are rated at 1.2A ripple current capacity (120 Hz). That implies the ESR is very low, and given that the rating climbs to almost 3A at 100 kHz, it must be wideband.
Does anyone know a reason these caps should not be used for this service, or whether there's a more effective alternative?

Panasonic FM and FC series caps are low ESR but I don't know if they come in the voltages you need.
The data sheet gives tan delta, which is ESR divided by capacitive reactance.
For the 250v/220uF cap, tan delta is 0.15, and reactance at 120Hz is 6 ohms, so ESR must be 0.9 ohms.
You're welcome :^)
That was very helpful. It's a little early in my plans, but I'm going to order a dozen or so now, just in case Panny stops making them. The 220uF/250V version will work for all the HKs I want to revive.

You're spot on about buying quickly. Matsushita Electric has been discontinuing quite a few useful caps., including some of their superb 'lytics. :> (( It's not that long ago that the nice ECQ-P(U) film and foil parts "bit the dust".

Panasonic 'lytics are excellent . Think about increasing the capacitance in the doubler stack and installing inrush current limiting thermistor(s). Modern 'lytics are much more volumetrically efficient than the OEM parts.
Following in Jim McShane's footsteps is THE thing to do, when dealing with H/K doubler PSUs.

You're certainly right about the volumetrics. I'll probably install these in the original HK cardboard-covered metal cans. Original values are mostly 150uF/200V, and even though the replacements are higher value, they'll fit inside with lots of room to spare. OK, thanks for the info, sounds like I'm on the right path.
