In my discussions with Jeff at least, he prefers the simplicity of a triode. Whether this is based on ideology, theory, or experience within his current amp context, I can't say.
For me, pentodes are a real option - they do have their charms. Jeff has drawn up a directly-coupled pentode drives SET amp for me and it will (with some changes) be my next amp build.

DC coupling should be easy and low component count . You can place the G2 supply within the output stage cathode circuit . You can also do away with the cathode bypass cap for the input stage by also placing this within the output stage cathode circuit . Total parts count 6 resistors (deduct one from grid stopper if using a low gm pentode), 2 capacitors , 2 tubes and an output transformer .

Thanks Al. Are you able to point me to some examples (schematics etc.). I'm no EE, but can work stuff out from schematics... sometimes.

I'm no EE either and I can't count :) The output stage cathode circuit may take a bit of wiggling to get the right voltages
