At first sight it would appear to be half rectifying the UL feedback - a really bad idea and would produce some interesting distortion.
But considering there would be a DC bias there well above 0.7v through the OPT primary, the diode would be "on" all the time and the audio just passing through.
Still a useless function IMO and I have never seen a UL implementation like that before.
There have been a lot of half-baked schematics and concepts posted to the Net over the last few years. Quite a bit of that has landed right here in this forum. :)

here is one approach using more than just a diode from the joenet.

... with good results, but that doesn't beat true triode mode (screen direct to plate via 1K resistor).
I did omit the regular diode which is useless especially with the zeners.
