I just got my 8903B and it's a hell of a great analyzer but this other one I just found has a few more features and I like the display. It's very easy to read.

did you buy it? I would not know how to use it without someone like you to instruct me, but as a lover of complex gadgets and of tinkering, I want it too.
No
I did get an HP8903B tho.

Good morning to all,
Congratulations,Mike on the purchase of your HP 8903B.
Wonderful machine.
You need one more item then you can stop collecting
test equipment. My HP 3582A is the single most useful
piece of test equipment I own.

Just curious Mikey; what caused you to cross over to the dark side with your new tag line? We used to go round and round about ears vs 'scope, remember?

Just like to change once in a while..If you think about it,this latest signature line has much of the same meaning as my old line but worded different.

Must just be me as it sounds much different to me than the old. As long as you are happy with it Mike ...... : )

It is different but it has parallels to my older line because it also speaks of measurements and their importance..

Does this do two-tone testing? I don't see IMD specifically labelled on the panel. Michael, you do realize it's possible now to do every kind of test imaginable with a PC and an interface box? Just saying, unless you're a test equipment collector, these things might not be the most cost-effective solution for testing your gear...

With the PC it's a PITA when you want to check power because you have to pad it because most sound cards only take 2 to 2.5v input. Can you read directly in on yours with the interface? It will do the two tones for IMD but who measures IMD anymore? You can usually find all necessary distortion product in the sweep and with THD and then you can interface these to a PC to look at the graph or print it out. Since the the audio analyzer started measuring THD to 4 and 5 places along with ability to see a flat response, they didn't seem to stress IM so much after that.

Michael, nothing could be easier. My interface box uses a simple 100k dual pot for this. I just turn it until the card has a useable input level. The card will accept up to 4V rms, so anything under 2W/8ohm is essentially a direct connection anyway. At higher levels, I just turn down the pot. I can also test high-swing driver performance at the grid of a power tube using a 10:1 scope probe. Really, it's all extremely quick and much less time consuming than many of the distortion analyzers I've used in the past.
"who measures IMD anymore?" Lots of people, including me. IMD doesn't always follow THD. It's an important test if you want the whole story about an amplifier's electrical performance.
Now, if you said the Roadie could measure TIM, I'd be sold. Otherwise, it's just another bench warmer. :)

Hi Michael,
I had an AP P1DD, but traded it for some parts/labor on my Studer. I still have an 8903B and recently acquired an R&S UPV. I had a choice of either going with Audio Precision or Rohde & Schwarz and decided on the latter as I wanted a single box solution.
I don't have very much time with it, but I can say their customer and remote product support has been marvelous. I wish R&S had an expert in Southern California.
Vbr,
Sam
Thanks Sam. I like that the R&S measures distortion to five digits..

You're welcome, Michael -- if only we lived closer!
Vbr,
