That looks like heat shrink tubing where he extended the wire.
What I don't see is the loudness tap on the front wafer of the VC.

Oh, good catch. You're right, I don't see it either. Know what? I think that funky red wire is the loudness tap, busted off. Hope I'm not right.
Either way, OP, please investigate that whole situation there, something isn't right.

Sherwood,
yes, Tre is correct, that red wire is the loudness side, and it is heat shrink that you see, the wire is very close to the chassis but in reality it is not touching anything at all. It was necessary to extend the cap lead there to reach the new tap, it was almost long enough but not quite..
To everyone who has helped me on this problem, thanks, I tried a 470k in there last night with again hardly any detectable reduction, then I just happened to have a 2.2meg laying on my bench I tried and it worked, it may be a tad too timid now:)
As Tre suggested, I think a 1meg will do the trick, but happy to see there was some change last night. I dug through my supply and found 2- 1meg resistors but it was very late.... too late to keep my eyes open and solder them in. So tonight, hopefully we have the cure!
I will follow up, thanks everyone.
