I need to add one in to my HT(2ch) for late night. I think I need a loudness as well. A lot of circuit to get through without distortion.
Follow Ups:
Years ago I sold Onkyo/Integra products. They had a compression mode called "Late Night" which boosted the rears and flattened the dynamic range for late night viewing/listening.
I'm with these guys when they say that it stinks to stick a compressor in-line (unless it's a guitar signal chain). The alternative is a really nice pair of headphones and a long cord for late night listening. I recommend that heartily.
I move around to much iam checking out used hiend home theater preamps. Some thing with balanced outputs. I think the digital domain might be the place to do it. A pre hdmi krell 5 channel would be perfect as I have read composite is better then hdmi anyway and prices drop off fast prehdmi.
buy a used compellor on ebay.
that'll cover your level issues.. they're not transparent but they aren't bad either.
For schematics and parts sources, check out GearSlutz. A lot of people have made DIY 1176, LA2A, and LA3A clones. Actually, so many have done this that there is a pretty big selection of parts, schematics, and even kits out there.
A second option is to check your disc player, TV, and cable box for both sound leveling and loudness options. Not nearly as much fun, but they might get the job done, and the price is right.
Finally, if you want more flexibility and have both deep pockets and DAW software running, you could get a Universal Audio UAD2 processor (PCIe or Firewire/Thunderbolt) and load up on a bunch of compressor plugins. Their implementation of the classics (LA-2A, LA-3A, 1176, Fairchild, dbx 160, and TLA-100) are very true to the originals. Having threshold, attack, release, and especially gate options might be really useful for your application. If you go this route, you can also get their Manley Massive Passive plugin, an amazing EQ you *will* find you needed desperately. You could also do your compression through their A800 or ATR-102 plugins - get some (faux) tapeyness going! Of course Universal isn't the only plugin supplier; it just the one I'm most familiar with for compressor and EQ plugins. But they *are* expensive. If you are getting a bunch of plugins, you might do better getting a Metric Halo FW interface and *their* bundle of over 100 plugins, which are really outstanding.

waking my daughter up is worse. I have found a very simple 12ax7 based one. Watching boom crash movies with out a remote is impossible.. boom crash whisper whisper boom crash.
I want a all digital preamp. I am tired of trying to build a decent analogue remote preamp. I cant afford a megabuck remote tvc.
Why don't you invest in some decent headphones for late night.
There are a Gazillion folks in your exact situation who've found headphones to be a great solution.
I don't know. I just never could live with cans. I have dt150,s and lots of amps. Just cant stand being pinned down I guess.
I'm not exactly sure how far you wanta go, but you should be able find most of the vintage tube compressors schematics on GroupDIY.
Of course, all vintage compressors that folks still use and coveted today are colored.
