Finished my new diy phono preamp with separate JEL labs design psu last night. Everything seems to be working as it should, no audible hum unless your ear is agaisnt the speaker.
Used quite a few Russian caps, both oil and Teflon after much testing at the breadboard stage. Quite happy with the sound.
This completes my reference system, which also includes a 300B amp and a Bruce Berman design 76 preamp with separate psu. All units are diy from scratch.
From now on whenever I try something out on the breadboards it has to sound better than the component in my reference system or it goes no further.
If anyone is interested in a nice quiet phono pre with lots of gain that's pretty easy to build see the attached link. For the power supply just google JEL labs and look at the phono pre section.
I have always liked the sound of the 211, so i am going to be looking for a lower voltage 211 schematic to breadboard next. If you are aware of any please let me know.

I suppose if you run a high output cartridge and have an additional line preamp stage that will do.
Just for comparison and not a criticism of your build, I built a similar (triode - passive eq - triode) phono stage but used 4 12ax7s (each stage paralleled) with constant current source loads and I get about 58db gain. works well to get ~2.5mv cart to line level with no preamp.
Nice work, seems solid and a sound design.
If you read the circuit walk through paragraph he says it is a total of 3 x 30 for 90 db.

The link below is pretty good.
If you run into noise pick-up problems with the phono, a shielded (metal) case works pretty well.
Thanks for the link Chip. Nice looking amp.
So far no noise; keeping my fingers crossed.
