I've built a few Aikidos. They are not balanced unless of course you use transformers in and out. If you want a fat (tubey) line stage build one with four 6CG7s and a 300 volt supply. If you want less fat try 6CG7 inputs and 6DJ8 outputs and 200 volt supply. If you are still interested I can guide you in board selection.

I have been so out of touch. I just found all of Johns kits last night. Finally a shunt regulator kit that I can get right! I want 2 of those for me new preamp. But if you want fat tubey sound you might need big capacitance and a unregulated choked tube power supply instead. But who wants fat and lazy. Fast and fat would be my preference. I would try a pair of the shunt reg boards with one of the octal options. I think there is a balanced one there but if not it has to be magnequest nickel outputs!
I am interested in a fat tubey sound. can you guide me in a board selection.
Thanks!
Please do.
John Brosky used to offer boards with the audio stage and power supply together. He's since separated them. I've built the All In One Noval (9 pin). The equivalent would be the Aikido Noval Stereo board and the PS-1 power supply kit. If you want to build a 6SN7 version get the Octal Stereo board and the same power supply board or John might have stock of the Octal All-In-One board. If anyone reading this thread is iffy about high voltages there are also Aikido boards (Aikido 12vac and Aikido LV) that run on lower (100 volts or less) B+.
Cheers, Steve
I have the Aikido using 6SN7, which is the Octal version of the 6CG7. The preamp, if built as designed will sound clean. It is a very neutral sounding tube pre-amp. You may want to consider this?
