... and find a good tape tech. These machines are (1) ancient, (2) quite complex and (3) in need of regular, periodic service and adjustment. Just a fact of life, sorry.
My own saddest experience was with a Revox A77 that looked great and even worked for a while until the caps started exploding (my tech calls them "firecracker capacitors") and then caught on fire. Just a wee fire, but still ...
Open reel tape lovers have to get used to this. It builds character :-)

Actually, I would rather spend some time and see if I can fix it myself. There is a lot of info on the net, and I have been restoring and building tube gear from scratch for quite a few years, so I have some skills. Besides, where is the fun in having someone else fix it?

For me, the fun in having someone else fix it (like Sam Palermo, ex Teac tape deck service chief) is knowing you're not likely to encounter another problem as soon as you fixed the current one. I mean, that sucker is more than 50 years old :-)
But good luck, and I mean that seriously. We definitely need more tape fans.
More like 30 years old I think. I actually enjoy working on things though, so I get double enjoyment out of it. Thanks for the good wishes, I will probaly need them.
