Radio Shack's Realistic or Optimus branded SCT-86 is as small as you're likely to find. The RCA SCT-510 is another variation of the same machine.
I have an SCT-86, and while it's not high-end, it sounds decent enough, and gets the job done. It has a spartan feature set, but does have 5-segment LED meters, separate left/right record level controls, Dolby B NR, and settings for CrO2 & metal tapes.
I also have several other decks, including 3 head decks from Nakamichi & TASCAM, so I know what a good deck sounds like, and the lowly Realistic ain't that bad.
You should be able to find one for $20 or less.

Well i got a almost new in box SCT 86... it was dated 1993 but cassettes were still the scene then.
I like it a lot! Does anyone know if Radio Shack had a paired/matching amp/receiver to this cassette deck?
Would cool to have it paired up with the amp that may have been part of that Radio Shack line up.
Radio Shack did sell a line of mini-components, but most weren't very good. There is at least one exception: The Optimus STA-300 receiver. It's digital, rated at 15 watts per channal at 8 ohms, and supposedly sounds decent. It even has a phono input. I don't know as it's a perfect match for the deck, though... but it is small.
There are other mini amps and receivers out there that offer comparable performance, but none that I know of with the Radio Shack brand.
Cheers & good luck,
Bobbo :-)
Thanks for posting.. .will look for one.
I can go a little bigger than a walkman, but something that size looks just right.
Still there may others, so chime in!
... You might also look around for a TEAC R-H300. It's more full-featured, and quite a bit higher quality than the Realistic deck. There's one for sale at the link below. (no affiliation with the seller, just for info purposes.)Also more info here: http://www.hifidatabase.com/Detailed/Teac_R-H300_4994.php
A couple of caveats: The one for sale at the eBay link is a 230v UK model, and the power cord would need to be changed out to work with a standard AC outlet.
