It's a defective capstan-motor drive transistor. It's the one mounted on a heat-sink (or chassis). A 220 case type. Fails often because it handles quite high voltages.

Thanks. Found a TIP48 mounted on the chassis at the power supply. Don't have one handy, so this will sit until I need to make an order to Mouser.
