Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions - very much appreciated! I am looking into your proposed models as much as I can - a lot to digest!
I'd love to hear other thoughts - particularly as I am still leaning toward the possibility of buying used speakers. In general I hope I may be able to buy a slightly higher level of performance with the same budget going toward second hand gear.

Something like this in the Dynaudio line. Something in the Excite series would work as well. Anyone familiar with Dynaudio can't deny the rep for quality bass, as well full range.

You would be pleased with Reference 3A speakers mm di Capo.
The De Capo's would certainly fit the bill.
I had some smaller Dulcets and I was amazed at the bass produced. The De Capo's would be that much better. A two way crossover-less design with less to get in the way of the music. They command a good price used but would be worth it.
