In Reply to: RE: cheap 15" woofer rated to 50Hz with sealed Q of .72, or a high power one rated to 23Hz with a Q of 1.35? posted by thump on October 30, 2016 at 01:06:58
I note that you're cussing about encountering problems when editing your posts. I note also that you've edited your Part 1 no less than 11 times!
Just an idea - why not prepare your complicated post in Word, mull over it overnight, re-read the next day and edit where necessary and only when you're totally happy with it, paste it into the forum?

even if i DID, the post would STILL require at least another 7 edits. one to move the first pic down where it belongs and not in the header, then another six to add each of the three other pics with second edits to move them all where they belong too which is far more clunky than it should be.
i never swore either BTW. i went out of my way NOT to swear, as much as i wanted, and am used to doing in another forum i visit every day where it's not a problem.
after an hour's worth or more of fighting this system (INCLUDING having to download every photo, re-size it, then re-upload it) because the forum refused to accept links) when i shouldn't have to, yes, i was very enraged, and rightfully so as far as i'm concerned. i've never had so many problems with trying to get pics into a post or edit my content anywhere else. at the forum where i actually DO swear, casually at that, i can just paste a pic URL into my text, and the site automatically turns the link into a pic... no "you can't do that!" PAGE.
...the post would STILL require at least another 7 edits
called "preview" which would nullify that assertion. Get it how you want before actually pulling the trigger.
because the forum refused to accept links
In fifteen years of posting, I've never experienced that - so long as there was no operator error. :)
i'd still like to know what GLITCH made the site keep deleting EVERYTHING after the 92dB rating in specs, even the last time it happened when i "successfully" re-added the rest of the specs and never touched the edit button after that.i just do a lot of edits. things occur to me after the fact that i need to add.

i'm still waiting for feedback on the actual topic of this thread
1. will the VB woofer be significantly better sounding DESPITE the 3dB resonant peak and 1.35Q? (which i should be able to compensate for to some degree with my amp's continuously variable crossover, and an EQ down the road if need be.) i've tried to look the topic of "what Q is too high?" online to no avail. i've ALSO tried to find 2.5 cubic foot boxes to no avail other than super heavy internally MDF lenovo knockdowns with flush mount routing for dayton woofers that's 3/8" too big for the VB
2. if upgrading to the VB is the better choice, then which wiring option is best?

Ok.
bear in mind, the MCM was originally intended to be just a temporary sub while i saved up for a pair of 2 x 12 boxes, but now, i've stumbled across really cool "LED sunflower" effects, like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao_Cj7wivdQ
and have decided, that if they look half way decent in real life, i will keep the JBL to save space and build a white nylon shell around the system and put one sunflower inside each side and top panel with shields along all of the edges to block light spillage and turn the whole thing into a mobile light show.
sunflowers are smaller, lighter, and cheaper than disco projectors which would require building wonky looking towers to get them high enough to project a decent sized pattern whereas, with sunflowers, i can turn the nylon into a seamless extra bright light show. i like simplicity. an illuminated monolithic slab is much more my style.
with everything hidden, i'll drop the sub a few inches and point it down for both a lower center of gravity and to couple with the pavement. until then though, i'll put it on display.
i doubt i'll find another sub that hits as hard as the JBL without spending more money.
I was just trying to be helpful! The other forum I regularly contribute to (not anything to do with audio) doesn't allow any post editing whatsoever. Once you press Send, your message is written stone - errors and all. I've now got used to composing long posts in Word first and, if it's one where I want accuracy and no misunderstanding, I'll re-read it the next day before pasting it to the forum.
i appreciate it. i don't know why, but the forum will only let me upload one pic at a time. i like providing anyone that might give an answer to my questions with ALL of the relevant info so they don't have to go looking for it on their own just like i try to give posts detailed titles instead of vague "help me!" ones, or even worse, annoying bait and switches. i don't like wasting anyone's time, including my own.
it's all good. i've found the solution i was looking for to step up from that MCM that probably whispered at the bottom octave. the JBL should REALLY move some air going by its size and above average specs.
i just wasn't liking that 1.35Q and resonant peak with the VM. if JBL recommends that users don't use sealed boxes just .1 cubic foot larger than mine, then it should be tuned right in the extension end of the sweet spot. adding a mattress pad lining should put it even closer to the goldilocks zone.
