In Reply to: RE: cheap 15" woofer rated to 50Hz with sealed Q of .72, or a high power one rated to 23Hz with a Q of 1.35? posted by thump on October 30, 2016 at 01:06:58
At those prices you need to be aware that the published spec is more of a wish list rather than a statement of fact.
I'have nothing on the 2nd because it is a car sub but of MCM I've heard nothing good except the price.

well i haven't HEARD about MCM, i've SHOPPED there and feel like i've gotten amazing deals. i bought a $40 each pair of high efficiency 12" woofers there for some cheap 3/4" boxes i restored with dayton crossovers and titanium tweeters and was REALLY impressed with the quality, attention to detail including MACHINED cast baskets, and beefy laid back sound those put out compared to speakers many times their price even if they were midrange forward with tweeters rated 4dB lower. at full 100 watt volume, they were as undistorted as could be with ease that would put a lot of speakers, especially including cheap PA speakers, to shame, and was surprised that the midrange didn't sound sloppy as i've owned 4 1/2" NHT superzeros.my last purchase there was a pair of 96dB 50-20kHz proel flash 8P 8" PA speakers that LIST for $500 and sell for much more than the $100 plus shipping i paid for them and their celestion drivers, including titanium waveguides that probably cost more as PARTS! i'm listening to them right now, and they sound NOTHING like crappy PA speakers! they image nicely nearfield and have a sweet midrange, though they are a little laid back at the far ends of the frequency range, but i'd put them up against ANY $100 (new) speakers you could come up with any day, especially using a 1 watt amp, or at party levels.
the BIGGEST limitations they seem to have really, are my PC's soundcard and the cheap vintage receiver i'm powering them with. i used my xduoo media player with them playing uncompressed WAVs once, and the sound opened up a lot as i'm sure it will on the class D amp i'll be mating them to soon too.
proel isn't a no-name brand in italy and probably the rest of europe too. i made sure to listen to whatever demos of their larger siblings that i could online, and even then, the best ones don't do them justice. i'm confident their sound will take a dump on pretty much ANY bike system that relies on cheap car speakers, especially cranked with difficult wood & metallic percussion. the only "coloration" i MIGHT attribute to them is a slightly thick sound compared to high end speakers, but at least SOME of that too is upsteam's fault.
i've been pretty happy with everything i've bought at MCM so far, and DO live in the real world where i'm not expecting miracles out of $23 15 inch subs and KNOW amp manufacturers generally do everything they can to squeeze more out of their specs. i'm pretty sure i used the word THEORETICALLY to describe my planet audio's rated power.
i'm not trying to dB drag race here, just build a decent sounding bike system that gets people's attention and can get them dancing after that. any car systems i'm able to embarrass after that are just icing on the cake.

Just recently on another forum (diyaudio.com) somebody had bought 8 of their 15" (not the one you're after I think) and found that 6 of them were so badly centred that half their excursion in one direction was used up before applying any signal.
i've seen reviews for some products that have similar complaints, but wonder if the people who get products with issues try contacting customer service first before ranting.i also shop at parts express, even more than MCM, and HAVE had a couple problems with orders there. i bought some pyle 6 1/2", if memory serves me right, 2 way outdoor speakers that were rated in the low 90s for efficiency and maybe 50Hz (or even lower?) for LF cutoff, yet when i listened to them, they were no louder and went no deeper than my NHT superzeros rated at 89dB 70-20kHz.
when i asked for it, they gave me a return RMA & a quick refund just as they did when a couple of the 8 x 6 1/2" poly woofers i bought had dust caps that weren't properly sealed. they even sent me replacements BEFORE i returned the defective drivers! to me, that's EXCELLENT customer service and why i love shopping at PE with complete confidence.
when you're buying speakers at huge discounts, it's to be expected that you might be getting factory seconds that need replacements, but you have to give the company a chance to fix things before tearing into them, as they lose money on return and replacement shipping.
i also don't believe every rant review. someone CLAIMED that those $40, 97dB rated, i think, 12" woofers i bought were only good for something like 89dB was full of crap. i used dayton titanium tweeters rated at 93dB with mine, and the tweeters couldn't keep up with the woofers output by the same several decibels expected. i don't know what that person's issue was, but it couldn't have been with the woofers which clearly weren't 89dB, so i'm inclined to give MCM some benefit of the doubt as far as rants go until they stick me with defective products and refuse to remedy the situation.
sometimes too, people rant on products for completely stupid reasons like the buyer who bought woofers and complained that they had 5 mounting holes instead of 8 because apparently they couldn't be bothered to inspect the product's photo which clearly showed 5 holes. if ANYTHING, they should have been delighted by it as they were recycling old speakers and had nothing but fresh wood to screw into instead of having to offset the drivers like i had to do with both the woofers and tweeters in the box i restored turning both 45 degrees, which wasn't the drivers' faults.
both the woofers and the proels i bought were VERY high quality and insanely low priced for what i got. until the day comes that MCM does screw me over, i've had nothing but happy endings with them.
i WISH the party speakers i rebuilt weren't in storage in another state. they would have been perfect for a trailer starter system, no subs needed and plenty of EFFORTLESS undistorted volume. i really love those $16 dayton (MB quart) titanium tweeters too. they have more speed than soft domes on wooden & metallic percussion, but sound a bit softer than aluminum domes which can be annoyingly harsh sometimes. i can see why they used to dominate car audio systems a couple decades ago.
