I assume that your friend also drives his Maxx 2s with Audio REF 250 monoblocs, REF 55SE preamp and Audio Research CD9. Oh no, it's a Krell system. So how do you know that the missing presence and bottom end articulation are due to the Alexias and not due to the AR electronics? Or, for that matter, the dealer's room compared to your friend's ? Or any other factors like the cable loom or the quality of the mains electricity supply?
Comparisons can be fraught with things to mislead. That's why I ask for a home demonstration in my own room with my own gear for any reasonably expensive component that I am contemplating.
You may be entirely right but how do you tell?

consideration when auditioning and comparing them. I'm familiar with how the Wilsons speakers react in any given system and listening environment. As you know I'm not specifying any particular difference in detail of sound in each of them, but their overall sound characteristics. True that Krell and ARC do present a different house sound, but time and time again I found that Maxx2 overall sound characteristic have more presence and bass no matter what equipment they're being driven with.
The only other Wilson speakers that did better than Maxx2 were the Alexandria and that was driven by Canary Reference Two Monoblocks, which put out only 80 watts/channel. Go figure eh..
If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing well
