I test drive cars on regular roads and expect to be impressed. These folks are in the business of making their gear sound good and have ample set up time. Sorry, just my 2 cents.
At CAF the Odyssey and GT Audio Works rooms sounded exceptional.
The upside is that when I come home from the show, I appreciate how nice my system sounds.
Follow Ups:
I absolutely agree. A hotel room's dimensions are not THAT different from the average "man cave", and if all the Kin's horses and all the King's men from the speaker company can't make it sound at least decent what chance to we have? And we have AC and refrigerators running too.
And what's with "Audio Show Music", often elevator music that however well recorded will never darken my threshold.
Loudspeakers don't come outfitted with anti-lock brakes, smart suspension systems, adjustable seats, GPS, or climate control.
Like my room or a hotel room.
Hotel rooms have weird proportions, flexible walls, and plasticky furniture.
1 -I'd say the proportions of the rooms are similar to many listening rooms.
2 - The walls of the rooms are probably on the thin side but so are many apartments.
3 - In most hotel-based hifi shows the furniture has been removed.
While not ideal, shows can still provide a very good general sense of how a speaker performs.
Aren't most show rooms 3 sided with a large open entryway connecting to a large open atrium or hallway? That strikes me as a bit atypical, as I've never lived in a house or apartment quite like that.
Well, I was thinking specifically of the rooms at the Denver Tech Center Marriott, where RMAF is held. Most of the rooms on the upper floors have a small entryway and then one room. I live in NYC and that also pretty much describes my apartment.
A few years ago I was at RMAF and heard a pair of speakers I liked very much. I was looking for new speakers at that time. A couple of weeks after I ordered a pair of the speakers. These were speakers with no reviews, no local dealers and no prior history I could reference. All I had to go on was what I heard in that hotel room. That turned out to be a very good decision. Knowing what I know now I'd make the same decision.
I'm just saying in some cases the sound in those hotel rooms isn't always as bad as some make it out to be.
Point taken. There are so many different types of show venues.Best of luck to all of us!
