I'm no JBL expert. Since I've never heard these spkrs. I'm wondering how much the mods may have contributed to the sound.
Scroll down to get to the C40 Harkness video.

Big house and the system resides in a small guestroom.
I guess it's not a very happy marriage :D
I owned a slightly different JBL, same size cabinet, almost... Mine were narrower, but as tall and deep, so only one 15" woofer. Mine was also a two way with a horn tweeter (the 'bullet' tweeter), but could have been three way.
It is true the cabinet could have a wide variety of sets of speakers.
(2) 12" woofers. or (2) 15" woofers. Excellent speakers BTW.
The midrange could be either the more expensive horn with a waveguide lense. or a 8". The tweeter could be a small one or the bullet horn.
The main POS on that era JBL was the crossover. Which should be totally replaced. The drivers are near bulletproof. And always a valuable set of parts alone. Standard cabinet of the day. thin back, thin front. Lost of vibrations. No internal bracing of any kind.
So it depends on what drivers are in there as to value.
The most valuable single driver would be a midrange with the acoustic lense.. Rare, valuable. Also used in the JBL Paragon.
JBL sound is bass strong. "West Coast Sound". Great for Rock. Symphonies..
Typically 16 ohm drivers.
They were also stuffed with various drivers/crossovers, so it's difficult to answer your question.
As far as the "standard production" Kenrick revamped speakers that I'm familiar with in stock form (Yamaha 1000M for example off the top of my head) they do seem to know their stuff, though this is going by the sound of Youtube videos.
The C40 came out when mono was king, so finding matched pairs/like cabinets may be problematic due to the variations mentioned above.
It was a popular cabinet design amongst the small group of AF's in my neighborhood (when I was little/1960, or so), but I suspect it was because of it's size VS Votts, Khorns, BIG EV speakers et cetera.
Not just wife approval was a factor as they could be placed in a den (remember den's;) and they were a form of horn loaded speaker for popular amps of the time.
