I've learned that it will sound great directly connected to my amp. I've also learned that two sources connected to the same amp via Y splitters, even with one turned off, will produce less than optimal sound, have volume problems and usually weak bass response.
Since I only have one amp and three other sources connected to an Audible Illusions preamp, I've decided to connect the OPPO to the AI preamp. When listening to the OPPO I will use it's remote volume control for convenience. When listening to the any of the other three sources I will have to use the volume knobs on the AI preamp. It does not have remote control capability.
Thanks,
henry

I would expect connecting the OPPO to your Audible Illusions preamplifier while using the OPPO remote volume control to be the best option. I recommend finding the sweet spot in terms of where to set the volume knob of the Audible Illusions preamplifier when using the OPPO remote volume control. When I use a source component with a remote volume control, I set the default volume level of my preamplifier at the 11 o'clock position, which allows enough gain for the remote volume control to have a wide-range of remote volume control settings, and with enough headroom for program material with unusually low signal levels to be increased via the remote control when needed.
I'm with you on that. The OPPO has been connected to the AI preamp for at least 4 years and your description is how I've used it.
I just thought, for a very short while, that maybe connecting the OPPO and preamp directly might provide some benefit. It only took about two days to learn that was not a good idea. I appreciate your responses.
