Thanks. You made me realize that since I am using the oppo remote controlled volume capability, when in the 1st floor room, any sonic effect it has is just passed on through the audible illusions preamp. I'll do some listening using only one or the other and if I hear no difference I'll be connecting the oppo directly to the amp. That eliminates the need for an L-pad or volume pot in the first floor.
Follow Ups:
I described my system on several sites and asked about the sonic quality of the OPPO BDP-95 DAC volume control. Most responses said the sound would be better. with the OPPO connected to my Audible Illusions preamp, for volume control.
I thought the OPPO had very good DACs so I sent an email to OPPO asking about the OPPO BDP-95 volume control and a second email asking for the bit value. Based on their responses I'm going to connect the OPPO directly to my amp. The AI preamp will be used for my other source components. I thought I would share OPPO's responses so here they are. I have no connection with OPPO other than being a very pleased customer.
Henry,
The player uses digital volume controls in the DAC so there is no loss of resolution and accuracy. So you can use the player direct to your amplifier.

Henry,
It is 32-bit, which is why you will not lose any resolution when using the player's volume controls.

Even though the variable output of the OPPO is 32-bit (considered bit perfect), there is no reason to take your Audible Illusions preamplifier out of the signal path. Plugging a source component directly into the input jacks of a power amplifier is not always superior, not unlike that of a passive preamp vs. an active preamplifier. I think you would find connecting the OPPO to the Audible Illusions preamplifier while still using the variable output control of the OPPO may be superior sounding. YMMV
Thanks for the reply. I posted earlier today that that is exactly what I've decided to do.
I mentioned that all components are in a 2nd floor closet and the OPPO and other three source components will continue to be connected to the AI preamp, which is connected to an amp in the same closet.
In the post I also mentioned the amp is connected to speakers on the 2nd and 1st floor. For convenience, when listening to the 1st floor speakers, I'll use the OPPO remote volume control. The AI preamp doesn't have remote control.
Since the Oppo has a VC you need to try it direct to the power amp. Its so easy to do and I guarantee it will sound different, you may or may not like better but you need to try it. Never decide based on anything but comparing and I lovevtubes but I'd still try both for sure.

I've learned that it will sound great directly connected to my amp. I've also learned that two sources connected to the same amp via Y splitters, even with one turned off, will produce less than optimal sound, have volume problems and usually weak bass response.
Since I only have one amp and three other sources connected to an Audible Illusions preamp, I've decided to connect the OPPO to the AI preamp. When listening to the OPPO I will use it's remote volume control for convenience. When listening to the any of the other three sources I will have to use the volume knobs on the AI preamp. It does not have remote control capability.
Thanks,
henry
I would expect connecting the OPPO to your Audible Illusions preamplifier while using the OPPO remote volume control to be the best option. I recommend finding the sweet spot in terms of where to set the volume knob of the Audible Illusions preamplifier when using the OPPO remote volume control. When I use a source component with a remote volume control, I set the default volume level of my preamplifier at the 11 o'clock position, which allows enough gain for the remote volume control to have a wide-range of remote volume control settings, and with enough headroom for program material with unusually low signal levels to be increased via the remote control when needed.
I'm with you on that. The OPPO has been connected to the AI preamp for at least 4 years and your description is how I've used it.
I just thought, for a very short while, that maybe connecting the OPPO and preamp directly might provide some benefit. It only took about two days to learn that was not a good idea. I appreciate your responses.
Excellent clarification; the set-up should be smooth-sailing...
I was thinking of using two Y cables connected to the inputs of my amp. The OPPO would be connected, via ICs, to one leg of each Y and the Audible Illusions preamp would be connected, via ICs, to the other leg of each Y. I learned it won't work well. There will be volume and sonic quality problems.Based on that I'll keep the OPPO and my other sources connected to the AI preamp and use the OPPO remote volume control for it. I'm not going to use any L-pads or attenuators. Thought I would share that info.

Hey thanks a lot for sharing that. For a long time I was frustrated that I could only get gear with no remote volume control.
So I built my OWN remote line attenuator. Pretty cool and it worked pretty well. However I always wondered if it was truly effecting the source input impedance?????
The digital software option has NO effect on anything!!! That is that way I would like to go with my stereo being I listen to 100% audio streaming. Right now I am using a Marantz NA7004 network player. Wonderful sounding and it would be difficult to switch. But that volume control may be the deal breaker!!!
Thanks
Charles
Does Oppo get internet radio. What station I listen to is Classic FM100 out of London.
Can you find it on your Oppo because I was thinking of getting one BECAUSE of the software volume control.
charles
The OPPO can accept internet and WI Fi streaming of movies and music so if you can get a radio station on your computer you may be able to stream it to the OPPO. I really don't know but it may be possible. You could always email OPPO customer support with that question.
