The 'box' is a tone control to up the midrange slightly, and the bass somewhat more.
My RSiiA was the same speaker as the RSIIB.. Except the RSIIB has better woofer cones, and slightly stronger magnets in the EMIM.
You can use the speakers without the box, no harm.
BUT, as you found out, they may sound a bit thin without it..
ANY sort of midrange boost and bass boost would bring them up to snuff.
So... Either buy a 'fat midrange' sounding preamp with a bass boost switch. Or add any equalizer and boost the midrange say 10% to 20%
And the bass 15%F to 30% adjusted to taste.
Best EQ box IF you use only digital sources would be like a Behringer Ultracurve Pro DEQ2496.
That is easily set to give a slight midrange boost and a fatter bass boost.
As for asking Infinity? NO way. They will not help you at all.
And finally, check the pins to each EMIM (the BIGGER rectangular speaker parts) and see if the wires have broken off the pin. Do NOT wiggle them.. They break off too easily! And are really no longer replaceable. Just touch them and see if they are actually still connected.
If they are all working OK. leave them alone. Any fussing with them will only get you some more broken pins...
Finally, Realize EACH EMIM is worth $200 used.... Your parts may be more than the wholes speaker system.

Good news! My friend has found the equalizer box so I will be able to hook up the speakers as originally designed. Thanks for your input. Sounds like these speakers are pretty fragile and with expensive (used) replacement parts.
one can never place a monetary value on an excellent speaker!
