I'm doing some research for my Dad. He wanted me to find replacement woofers for his speakers. He had some JBL's that were 10" that were about 30 years old. I told him he's better off updating to something new. He's into classic rock and blues and wants to spend between $400 and $500 for a pair of floor standing speakers. Any advice would be a big help thanks!

Psb Stratus Bronze, Silver...or Paradigm Studio Reference 60. I've owned the 60's and they will rock.

Was ALMOST gonna suggest something like the Klipsch KG 5.5 that my ex used to own. I did a LOT of work (sealing cabinets, putting rope caulk on the horns, finding a Conrad Johnson PV5) to make them a good compromise between her tastes & mine. In the end, she was swayed towards MY tastes when we paired some B&W Nautilus 805s and a nice Von Schweikert sub.
At a reasonable level? The Klipsch Forte is pretty darn awesome - I'd say older is better, if found in good condition.

What's te rest of the system Gear? There may be little point in going beyond the quality levels of the JBl's IF the supporting gear is Mid fi (or less)
No brickbats intended.. just a wee bit of pragmatism .
...some good choices
They are a 4ohn speaker but are very efficient so it won;t take much volume to make them sing loud. They are a very well balanced and neutral speaker.

I was always impressed with my friend's system and I finally got lucky and found a good deal on a brand new pair of CS3.7's.

...I used to own a pair and they were terrific.
The very looks give me the impression they are very good sounding.
Cheers

I like them a lot. I've had them almost four years and I still think they sound fantastic. I have absolutely no desire for a different pair of speakers.
...I feel the same way about my Thiel 7.2s driven by Manley NeoClassic 250s.
Probably L26 Decades from the 70s. I restored a pair for a friend a while back. They are worth replacing the woofer foam surrounds and replacing the tweeter with a good silk dome around 93 db. The tweeters from the period were the weak point.
Yep that and a crossover upgrade will make them better than when new.

I agree with 6bq5 that the JBL's are likely better than what you can get for $500.00 UNLESS you are buying used. Chances are the JBL woofers only need new foam surrounds. That is a cheap and easy fix.
It would be hard to beat the JBL's for rock and blues...

fix the JBLs-
they will be better than what $4-500 will get-
