I see its been awhile since these speakers have been discussed and wanted to get some fresh opinions. I was wanted to upgrade my speakers and I have 3 possible options.
1. Keep the speakers I have. Klipsch KG 4.2s, replace a tweeter diaphragm that is rattling and restore the crossover.
2. Buy a mint condition set of Polk Audio Monitor 10s which will probably also need crossover work.
3. Buy a used something else current production tower(Polk, infinity, etc.) in the $250-$300 range
I have a 30wpc tube amp and I listen to a wide variety of music. I like the imaging of the Klipsch and the overall sound, but I'm just wanting to try something else.
Follow Ups:
In the early 80's I helped my gf buy a small system for her apartment and was struck by the Polk sound. She ended up with a pair of Monitor 4's and, IIRC, a 30W H-K receiver. A few months later I went searching for my own system and told the sales person I liked the sound of Polks. She suggested I give Dahlquists a listen and I agreed the sound was similar, so I ended up going with DQM-8C's (and Carver separates) and have stayed with Carver/Dahlquists ever since. FWIW.
A pair of Dennis Murphy modded Pioneer small monitors, a Dayton 10 or 12 in sub and a couple caps for a high pass filter

A mint pair of 10s wouldnt need crossover work but would benefit from upgraded modern parts. Price is everything especially on the used market. I remember you could get a nice pair of tens for a c note. You need to hear them first as you would any speaker. My concern is that the Polks sound is a lot different than the Klipschs sound.

The guy is asking $250 and has already made it clear that he will be unwilling to budge. From what i have read, that seems a little high.
A different sound may be a good thing as the Klipsch seem a little bright at higher volumes depending on the genre.
My concerns with the Polks would be a lack of imaging and power hunger neither of which are an issue with the Klipsch.
Third on the price being too high. I regularly find these at thrifts for $20 needing $30 bucks of refoaming. Even considering a recaped pair, $150 is more like it. If they are mint originals Then even less because the corssover caps are likely gone or about to be gone.
They will image fine. Is it an older set with Peerless tweeters or newer with Polk branded tweeters? 250 is too much even if wood not vinyl veneer and mint. Most were vinyl veneer.

Yeah, $250 is way too much for what they are. They might image
better placing them on their sides so the drivers are vertical.
I think I'd rather listen to KLH 6's, 17's or Advents.
From the little experience I've had with Polk I'd go with the Polk's!!!!
Had several Klipsch speakers over the years and never really was my taste.
Get the Polks and fix them up. They are WELL worth it!

The Polk Monitor 10 is a classic.
