Hi there,I've recently been looking into purchasing a pair of speakers mainly for my PC and it just seems a bit overwhelming because I have no idea what I'm really looking for and thus I was advised towards this site asking for advice.
I'm looking to spend approx £200 but I could quite easily go over that a bit if need be and the intended use is for PC music/movies/tv shows and occasionally using them for gaming.
Edited my original post and for some reason it wiped half the message off >.<

i have these (see link) and they sound WAY better than they are supposed to. which is what i find with a lot of computer speakers.
the promedias sell here for $129 or so and they are quite satisfying. even in the bass. i have the "subwoofer" control nearly all the way down to get the right sound and it's hard to believe how decent this little system is.
they image too, even beyond the speaker confines and sometimes they seem to put things behind my shoulder. and i was really surprised that the sound is this nice, something i never expected from klipsch computer speakers and at this price.

Personally, I would focus on a small DAC for your computer. You can get the new Red Audioquest dragonfly along with their Jitterbug. Any good small DAC will be better than what your computer will output. Then you can get your speakers. Also, if you use a music app like JRiver or any of the others, that's going to give you better sound too. These little things are very noticeable. I've heard desktop systems with guys spending a few hundred on these nice speakers, but the system with less expensive speakers along with a nice DAC/headphone amp, always has sounded better. It's still all about the source.
Just one man's opinion and I don't have a pair of desktop speakers, so I can't just tell you to buy what I own like most posted will do. It's still about your own ear. I'd use this as a starting place and go to a store and listen to get an idea of what YOU like. We all hear differently. I personally and in love with the new Vandersteen speaker line, but some don't like the. We are all correct if you get what I am saying.
Their F series on a budget, or step up to the A3x or ARTist 3. The ARTist 3 is technically similar to the A3x but is designed for uses like yours. It looks nicer than the A3x and has a built-in USB interface for direct connection to your computer. It also has a nifty feature that lets you control the volume of both speakers with a single speaker's volume control. I own two pairs of its big brother, the ARTist 5.
The tweeter in the Ax series and ARTist series is the same hand-made unit as in their top-line pro monitors, all the way up to the $50K/pair S7A Mk2. In my opinion, it is better than Dynaudio's famed Esotar2. (I've owned both.) The tweeter in the F series is a smaller version which I have not heard.
Not to disrespect Audioengine (I've never heard their speakers), but keep in mind that their speakers are not "active" speakers, but rather "powered" speakers -- essentially a built-in stereo amp hooked up to traditional speakers with passive crossovers. I suggest you go with a true active design like the ADAMs or the JBLs that someone else recommended. There are quite a few competitors at this price point. You might try going to the forums on gearslutz .
you decide the size you need and how much you feel like spending and they do the rest.
It really is that simple unless you want to become an audiophile with all that entails.

I can't see your what you intend to spend but on a budget I'd look at JBL LSR305 and a 2ch USB interface like this:http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/US2X2.
From Sweetwater it'll cost around $450 for the lot but you might get it cheaper elsewhere.
Oh, I edited the post originally and for some reason it now has cut off half of the original post and when I attempt to edit the post it doesn't seem to change.
I was looking at approx 200 GBP, but I can go higher if need be. Going to be using the speakers for mostly music & tv/films with the occasional gaming.
Looking for something with decent build quality because I'd recently bought a Logitech Z333 and they stopped producing audio within 3 months of purchase and to be honest it's not the first time something from logitech has done that.
I have A2s and love them, but they drop off quickly and won't give explosive film sound effects. For most music, they've outstanding. Youtube, great. But no dinosaur footsteps.
If you're on a budget, try the A2s with their sub and send the sub back if you feel that you can live without it.
If it's your main music/film sound system, then A5s will have a bigger sound and less need for the sub unless you listen to a lot of bombs or music with heavy bass.

The people in the linky sell the JBLs but so do Thomann, absollutemusic, GAK and numerous others here in the UK. If they don't go JBLs low enough for complete gaming satisfaction you later add the associated subwoofer.
All of them could also sell you a suitable USB interface should you need one and any suitable cabling. Prices start at around £60 for a USB thingy.
Audioengine A2+
$249 USD, not sure what the exchange rate is.
I have the A5+ from audioengine. Very nice.
The speakers have built in Amplifiers so you are good.
Looking on Amazon the A2+'s come to £195 whilst the A5's come to £295, are they worth the extra £100 compared to the A2's? From what I've read about them since you posted it seems like the A5's eliminate the need for a subwoofer and the A2+'s have room to add one in the future should I wish to?
To add a subwoofer to the 2+ will cost more than 100 pounds. So it is better to go for the 5+ unless you want to try out the 2 and see if the bass is good enough and avoid buying the subwoofer. Of course the 5 will have a bigger sound than the 2. To compare the two, you can order both and send back the one you dont like. You can even order the subwoofer also and return it if you like the 5 better.
Have fun
Bill
