I'm looking for anyone who has bought or heard the new Carver ALS speaker. Robert Green, who I respect more than any other writer for the Absolute Sound, loves it and Carver has dropped the price.
Follow Ups:
...from TAS.
ALS has it by nature, without flinging any extra treble at you. Low intermodulation is the key, I think. In any case, the effect is very real. But the tonal character of familiar recordings was sometimes odd unless one had done some work to correct it. -REG
..."Part of this may be that in my room I could not get the speakers quite as far from the sidewalls as I would have liked...One obvious limitation might be the need for sufficient distance to each sidewall, an important factor because a great deal of sound is aimed at the sidewalls. Though Carver himself declared satisfaction with what he was hearing at my place, I wished that I had another foot or two on either side. (The room I was using is fairly large in total area, 27 feet long, but not wide, a little short of 14 feet.)... but on the whole I think these speakers will give their absolute best in rooms at least 14 feet wide, preferably even wider. (Carver tells me that in future versions he intends to add a control to adjust the speaker for different room dimensions.)"
it appears that all the 4" drivers aimed sideways !
I'm a fan of tall line arrays, but coherence and uniform directivity are tops on my priority list.
I,listened to the prototype a couple,or three years ago for two weeks,, at the time time Bob was still tweaking them. When Inheard them last,,the soundstage was pretty good,, but that was about all. Just my .02
...he likes open baffle designs and is very sensitive to timbre and tone since he plays the violin semi-professionally.
Big fan of dipoles myself ....
A poster said in a comment made after the article in TAS by Green that this speaker came out in 2011. Excellent article, BTW , as usual by REG.
Jack i heard the Carver AL-111 speakers at the 1996 Stereophile show in NY.
The system was the Carver Lightstar Reference amp. Carver Lightstar passive preamp.
Wadia 16 CD player.
This was one of the best sounding systems i heard at the show.
The soundstage was gigantic and really impressive. The bass was fast and tight.
That Carver Lighstar Reference amp was amazing. It sounded like a top of the line tube amp.
Actually it was the Carver AL 111+ speakers i heard at the 96 Stereophile show.
Do you know if the carver lightstar amp , became his Sunfire amp ?BTW Those light star amps are very rare ...
I'm pretty sure they are related. If so the concept is very interesting. The sliding power supply running cool is fascinating but probably the second most important factor in the amp's design. If my friend is correct and I do trust him, the fact that the power supply voltage and signal voltage are always close(within 5 volts) means the output devices are running in a very linear region which is obviously good for performance. I'm told this is mentioned in the Sunfire white paper.
The sunfire is not a bad sounding amp , actually , pretty good considering its price point , quite possibly his best SS amp.
Jack ,
I guess if simple things like tonal balance , timbre and dynamics means nothing go for it ..
I take it then that you have both heard the speaker and think REGreen is delusional.
Axponia, i think 2012 not sure now, the show at the time was in fla , it was a few years ago ..@Jack ,
Jack on second thoughts my comment may have been inappropriate , we may not be discussing the same speakers for all i know , as I'm not aware if Carver has made any changes since or if its the same speakers i heard , as i have not seen the AS report to comfirm any...
regards

Can only comment on the carver, not on Mr Green ...:) he may genuinely like them and not have an issue with their tonal balance .Bob at the time claimed a 100 hz roll off for his linesource planers , which, errr , makes them pretty special , with their 4 inch baffle and all .. :)
