Hi, Mr. Peabody,
I noticed that Dynaudio now has LE (limited edition) versions of their Contour line. I'd love to hear the differences between the S1.4 and the LE version.
Regards,
Tom
Follow Ups:
Trickle down stuff; tweeter coating, crossover upgrades. Probably similar to what was introduced in the Confidence II range a few years ago. The main result in the Confidence II was a little bit fuller, richer sound that's better at low-medium volume levels.
Given the big improvements in the Focus line while the Contour line has stood pat, the two lines were becoming close to equivalent in performance and in price. The S1.4 and S3.4 LE upgrades are trying to differentiate them again. But I suspect this might be the last hurrah for the Contour.
For that matter, it can't be too long before the Confidence line gets a major overhaul or gets axed.
Hi, Dave,
For my money, the S1.4 was a good investment. I've enjoyed them for seven years now and they continue to make me smile whenever I listen to music. I probably couldn't afford them now and have been thinking about what to do once the drivers and/or cross-overs need to be replaced. If Dynaudio can rebuild them for a reasonable price that's what I'll probably do.
Regards,
Tom
I don't think you have to worry about that any time soon.
On the other hand, the current Contour and Confidence models have been around for quite a while now. At some point they're going to be replaced, and at that point I would expect used prices to drop and you could score a nice pair of used C1s for less than what you paid for the S1.4.

Coincidentally I heard the 1.4LE Saturday but only compared it to another stand mount by Atohm. I wasn't looking to buy, just out seeing what's new.
So what'd ya think of the S1.4 LE?
With the little bit I heard it was good, impressive bass, but that's pretty much synonomus with Dynaudio. 1.4le had the Dyn sound, the background more dark opposed to airy, just a nice sound.
I did hear a $4500.00 Atohm in comparison, same system. The Atohm didn't have the bottom end of the 1.4le but presented more of an open sound with details being more vivid or easier to hear. I have to say the little Atohm was impressive. My only concern would be whether the extra emphasis in piano, cymbals etc. would be fatiguing over time or with the wrong equipment.
I also wouldn't recommend Dyn's with a system leaning too warm or laid back. Well, with that being said I drove a set of 2.5t's with Conrad Johnson for quite a while.
Thanks for the reply.
When I was auditioning speakers and compared the Dynaudio S1.4 with other similar speakers I found that the initial sparkle of the other speakers caught my attention, but after spending hours in the showroom, listening to a variety of sources, I knew that in the long run I'd appreciate the overall musical qualities of the Dynaudio sound. I haven't regretted the decision, and found I can use a lively LOMC cartridge and solid state amplification and enjoy just about anything thrown at the S1.4's. Even CDs sound good, with many nights spent listening to only digital playback.
