Quality "back then' remains as Quality Today.
That said You can get significant upgrade with your Venerable oldsters with Modern Electronics.. The Moderne vs Vintage differences are Significantly greater, your Speakers 'could' perform to levels their designers never even hoped for.
Follow Ups:
A good example are early acoustic suspension speakers that were almost all underpowered by the'powerful' 40 watt tube gear of their day. These speakers were all waiting for good 100 watt(or more solid state amps with their high power and damping.
I certainly agree with hahax. This is because I well remember dealer ads for AR-3(a) speakers offered with a Dyna ST-70. At a minimum I would think the Dyna Mk IIIs would have been better and an H-K Citation 2 better yet.
Today an audio buddy has a pair of restored AR-3as but he drives them with modern Herron electronics to his full satisfaction.
