I have a very nice pair of Alon Lotus Signature floorstanders that my wife is bugging me about. Are there any Bookshelf speakers that can match up with a nice pair of floor standers for $3000 or less? Thanks,Chet

Here are some options...Elac BS 403 Air-X active monitors. There is a pair on the 'Gon in good shape asking $2750 which go down the the high 30's.
Harbeth Super HL5 large 3 way monitors. There is a pair on the 'Gon asking $3200. Those speakers get down to a respectable 40Hz. They can also be mounted on Sound Anchors stands which are purpose-designed for the HL-5s (*see link below).
I'm not sure if you're open to stand mounts? But there is a pair of Evolution Acoustics MMMicro One's on the 'Gon for $2399 which are fast, punchy & have excellent bass which gets down to 35Hz in room. Driver and build quality are also excellent. In fact, I just bought a pair myself as my interim speakers for the next 3 months.
Good luck with your search!

I used to have Alon Model IVs. I got rid of them because I came across a pair of Acoustat Model 3s in very good shape for $500 at a local pawnshop. I am lucky in that I have a man-cave where my wife gives me more leeway. Never could either speaker go in our upstairs. Carl Marchisotto told me that the reason he changed some of his designs is WAF. Maybe take a look at what NOLA has to offer that is more wife-friendly? I can't imagine a pair of bookshelves that will make you happy once you've had the Alon Lotus. I would love to hear the pair that could do that. Good luck.
Show her pictures of GoldenEar Triton 2 and 3 floorstanders which go for $3k and less. Great speakers. If she approves the looks, go for the 2 and you've got it made.
Good Luck
Bill
What amp are you using?
I agree that using stand mount speakers could complicate the decor even further. Then not only does the speaker have to appeal but so does the stands.
However, you might consider the KEF LS50's at a reasonable price. KEF's drivers do sound very similar no matter the model it's just with floorstanders you get more bass etc. but a real positive for their monitors you get great sound in the frequencies produced. I also like Dynaudio whose monitors produce a surprising amount of bass. Focal is decent as well.
You might also consider slim profile speakers by Totem. Or, a modern looking sub/sat system from Gallo Acoustics.
Anything you can tell us about what it is your wife don't like about your current speakers? I wonder how she'd like a nice Ferrari red set of Zu Audio, LOL They do make a "bookshelf", I'm afraid you would lack some low end though.
If you put them on stands and pull them away from the walls, a good 2-way monitor will generally be easier to place, image better, and be more coherent than a equivalently multi-driver floor stander.
However, which one you like best will depend on your tonal coloration preferences and other sound characteristics. $2,000-2,500 will buy you a pretty darn good small monitor.
Switching from the floor-standers to a bookshelf will almost certainly result in less bass response. If you like the Alon sound, then audition their book shelf speakers.
What is it about the Signatures that your significant other finds objectionable? If it's about floor space, by the time you install the smaller speakers on stands, you'll be taking up the same amount of space at your current speakers.
I can't go to work today. The voices told me to stay home and clean the guns.
There really are few, if any, bookshelf speakers that will sound good on bookshelves. That leaves book shelf boxes on speaker stands which, as above, take up the same position on the floor and often the stands look less appealing than the floor stander.
Those speakers appear to be fine sounding, but maybe lean toward "mancave audio" decor.I would hold a council meeting with the SO and try to settle on floorstanders that look more like nice furniture-nice veneer and SO approved aesthetic.
With all the choices, there has to be something that sounds great AND gets the nod from the S.O.
replace the S.O.

These are the Alon's with the outboard crossover, nice curves and cherry veneer, made just before Alon became Nola.In fact I believe Nola makes a similar looking version, with internal crossovers. So, they have a nice look.not like the original black boxy behemoths.
I'm assuming here for a moment - and you know what happens when we assume!
Your wife is not happy with the look and enlarged foot print some models have.
If your wife is agreeable why not take a few trips to local high end audio shops and look together. Perhaps you can find something that suits both your need for sound and hers for appearance.
I have to be honest. Those speakers can be a "taste" thing aesthetically speaking.
