Speaking of balance controls I have a problem in that it always seems to me that my stereo shifts images over to the right. I checked the relative output of the two speakers with an SPL meter at the sweet spot playing one channel at a time with pink noise as the source and found that the left channel actually was 1 dB louder than the right, the opposite of what I expected.
My best current theory is that because my hearing is better in my right ear than in my left (Yes, I am a geezer.) this might be the cause of the image shift to the right. If anyone has any thoughts or facts about this I am very interested.
Follow Ups:
For stereo image imbalance, I'd first suspect room dis-symmetry. In home listening environments, side wall reflections can smear the sound that arrives directly. Unlike larger concert halls, in a home environment the time delay in reflected sound is so small that the brain cannot distinguish it from the direct sound. If that creates an inconsistent apparent volume between left and right speakers, the result is a shifted, wandering or inconsistent stereo image. This may vary with the frequencies involved. That's why toeing-in speakers and wall treatments can help.
As for your hearing loss being worse in one ear than the other, the brain can actually do a fairly decent job of compensating for this. When you are out and about in the real world, does your hearing still accurately locate the source of sounds? In spite of long-standing tinnitus and being past 60, my ability to locate sounds in the real world is still fairly accurate.
Thanks for your response, misstl. I had been thinking of my room as being remarkably symmetrical, but after reading your response I reconsidered, and yes, there is a stuffed leather chair closer to the left speaker than a similar chair on the right side. I feel a bit sheepish about not figuring this out for myself.
In regards to your question, no, I don't hear sounds being shifted to the right in any situation other than when listening to the stereo.
Thank you for your help.
