This runs counter to Merlin "theocracy" and is perhaps at odds with conventional wisdom when it comes to speakers, but my VSM's sound best as you see them in the attached photo. They are coupled to the vibration absorbing Artisan Audio platforms (which are filled with steel micro bearings) via the Soundocity outriggers and Yamamoto ebony spike cups. The platforms are decoupled from the floor via modified Herbie's Audio Lab "Little Fat Gliders". I added Herbie's "Soft Fat Dots" underneath the dBNeutralizer Pads to create footers that allow the platforms/speakers to partially float, approximating the Townshend Audio Seismic Speaker Bars.
I have directly compared this setup with the Z-Feet spiked into the floor (hardwood directly over concrete slab), and my VSM's are cleary superior with the outriggers and on the platforms. The VSM's with the Z-Feet are better on the platforms than the floor, but not as good as the outriggers on the platforms.
Follow Ups:
is due to the elevation of the speaker, not so much with any superior nature of the products used to elevate the speakers. You will have a seemingly radical change when you elevate a speaker using anything, and similar if you change the front baffle slope. When you raise a speaker you are completely changing the wave front and how it interacts with the room as well as how it strikes your ears. There would be a problem if it didn't sound far different.
Not surprised at all that it sounds better to your ears, especially if the speakers were on lower stands initially. :)
The greatest impediment to advancing an audiophile system is the audiophile.
Another possibility or contributing factor could be a feedback problem from the speakers to the source and/or electronics in the system. In which case isolation would perform better that hard spiking the speakers. The best solution for this type of situation is spiking the speakers for minimal motion and isolation at the other end of the feedback loop.
When I had my VSM SEs -- admittedly the pre-lead-free, MMxe, MMxe2, MMxe-cubed versions and so on -- cotton in the ears proved valuable to me and all the music lovers and audiophiles I invited to listen.
the lead-free versions remove the cotton from your ears.
you're consistent!

It's not hard to surpass the stock Merlin footers. My much modified VSM-MXs were improved with Star Sound Audio Points, several pounds of steel microbearing in place of the standard sand inside the cabinet, and pouches of steel microbearing on top of the cabinets. I later transitioned to Stillpoints Ultra 5 footers, and may try SS Rhythm platforms in the future.
Bobby was of course himself a tweaker, producing more iterations of the VSM than I could follow. As much as I enjoyed talking with him about all sorts of modifications to the VSM, I think his business model would have been better served had he re-focused his efforts on designing something entirely new. However the good news is that for those so inclined, there is lots that can still be done to improve the VSM and BBAM: better caps, resistors, wire, and power supplies.
So much conflicting physics, it's making my head hurt.
This reminds me of the Renaissance we experienced when Kurt Cobain died.
Oh well enjoy your Marlins.
