I just ask, because otherwise, I don't know why you'd be concerned about the ferrofluid.
I certainly wouldn't introduce it into a Series II tweeter.
Follow Ups:
I do think, from time to time, about at least auditioning a pair of Series IIIs. Opinions about which model is superior seem to be inconclusive. I am partly curious about ferrofluid too because I have a pair of PSB Stratus Minis that have ferrofluid in their tweeters.
The other thing I'd note? IF they're still available, B&W was supplying the SIII tweeters (i.e.: with ferrofluid) as repair/replacement stock for all of the Matrix 801 models. I have never heard anyone say the tweeter WITH ferrofluid was better.
If I am not mistaken, I think ferrofluid was a technique used to help keep tweeters cool, to reduce heat, when they were used in stressful situations. If true, this lessens my concerns because I listen at moderate levels. I don't think my amp is clipping, and I prefer to preserve my hearing by avoiding threshold of pain levels.
(EDP's post directly below) Ferrofluid is supposed to help tweeters stay cool but it also alters the resonant characteristics of the tweeter material. Your crossover is designed to feed a tweeter with viscous ferrofluid in it, dried up goo won't work as well. This should be true at all playback volume levels.
