In Reply to: RE: substitute driver for Adire 15" passive radiator posted by hahax@verizon.net on July 06, 2015 at 09:02:01
Thanks so much for the responses! The SEAS looks very nice indeed. However, from my understanding of passive radiators (which is not much...)I thought that the passive radiator was supposed to have a larger surface area than the active woofer (12" in the case of the Shiva). Is this not correct? Can one use a passive radiator of the same or smaller size than the active driver?
Also, how do I determine what I want the resonance frequency of the box the box to be so I can calculate the weight to add to the passive radiator? IS this just a matter of taste with respect to how low I'd like the sub to play? For example, the 12" ScanSpeak passive radiator at Madisound has a free air resonance of around 9Hz. Does that mean (theoretically) I could tune the box to 9Hz?
Thanks so much,
Chris

The PR can be same size as the woofer...or larger. For instance,
the JBL PR15 (15") was designed to be used for a 15" D136 I think.
Depending on the alignment, the PR may need to have a volume displacement of up to 3x that of the woofer.
The EV Interface A had a driven 8 and a 12 PR with 400 grams mass. In use the PR could visibly move much more than the 8 did, even though it had about 2.7x the area.
The poster "boodles" needs the info, reply to him, not me?.
