On that rig you could set the left/right balance by eye!

A commercial plasma add-on tweeter was marketed by the Dukane Co. in the early 60's. Subsequently Dr. Alan Hill developed the Plasmatronic loudspeaker which garnered some impressive reviews in the mid-60's.

all in good fun and in the name of science though!

Good acting on his part..
...Mr. Wizard or Bill Nye. Maybe he's just being willfully stupid for entertainment's sake.

Hill developed ozone poisoning from his plasma designs.....
About 20 years ago, though, a French company came out with a full range plasma. Pretty impressive size wise (seven feet tall and something like 5 feet wide per side)as was the number gas cylinders employed, IIRC. Showed but never made it into production
You can avoid the ozone problem by bathing the arc in helium but that makes using the speaker quite expensive in the mid to long term.
..perfect for high-end audio..
One would think so but it's not a high purchase price but the high cost of running them and the inconvenience of having to store and regularly change large high-pressure gas bottles.
As far as I am aware helium goes for around $300 per bottle in the US. Being a welder by trade I estimate that one bottle would probably last a day or so (working on 8hrs per day) and may be a lot less.
The bottles are about 5ft tall weigh 165lbs and the colour is legally prescribed. Over here helium bottles are brown.
Should have played Hammond organ through it for
a Leslie speaker effect!. Well, a tiny bit.
He is rather forgetful of the basics-
and the shock therapy does not seam to effectively deter him...
Happy Listening
What gets me is that no-one has done it, since Hill (commercially). The ozone problem can be completely avoided.
