Never in history has there been a wider selection of excellent small speakers to choose from. For example, Audioengine A5+ self-powered monitors have decent bass and will save you some precious space...
Follow Ups:
I've had Audioengine A5's kicking around my home-base for about 5-6 years now and have loved them in a variety of installation conditions. I wish all my hi-fi purchases were this good, over the long run!
The best setup for the A5's was on my boat, mounted into a low console in the main salon, used with an small sub stashed in the same console. They didn't corrode away in the salt air- a testimonial to their good construction. Next, they sounded nice in the condo's bedroom system (with same sub) and are now in the livingroom as center channel for movie-watching. Versatile- hell yeah! Consider your potential future installations. I'd recommend a powered monitor. There are lots out there but the Audioengine people care about sound, that goes a long way, eh?
The A5's are a little warm, not at all bright, capable of decently high levels. Voices sound great (and movie dialog too); they're nice and smooth through the midrange. I plugged the ports when with the sub using foam balls and got a nice blending. Without the sub I left the ports open- they go pretty low. I only replaced them recently with a pair of Boston VR-M60's and a vintage Carver amp- louder, clearer and lower but lots bigger and more expensive.
They require a speaker cable from the powered left to the passive right. I made a cable from recycled CAT5 wire per Thorsten's TNT recipe with very fine results. Don't use no stinking zipcord, please! You probably won't regret buying them.

Ahh... indeed. I would love to get away under $500 for a pair? And it would be driven with a solid state amp.
You mean $500 for a passive pair? I would suggest Dali Zensor One. Paper cones. Good review in Stereophile.
Happy listening

Audioengine P4 passive speakers might do just fine.
