I was looking at some very interesting line array designs and I thought this could be an ideal way to get big HT sound with a relatively unobtrusive corner line array.
8 feet of speaker jammed in a corner would take up less space than a pair of powered towers and it's possible to consider all 4 corners of the room sporting an efficient array that my present Outlaw 750 (165 WPC) could power with ease.
I have two questions... has anyone ever heard a line array and is this a good use for them? Also, what would the center channel look like for something like this?
Follow Ups:
How loud do you really need to get? Even a compact array on 165W is going to exceed 110dB well before the amplifier is out of gas.
The center channel for something like this should probably be an array without a tweeter, with some EQ'ing to bring up the treble a bit.
It's not so much loud as lush I guess. Enveloped. Since I've been reading that line arrays are the "opposite" (sort of) of point source, I thought it would be ideal for an HT speaker.
As it is, I really prefer the sound of my bi-polar Def Techs in the theater to anything else I auditioned. I tried B&W, planar, hybrids like the ML (so pretty IMO) and finally fell in love with the bi-polar (large) sound field. A large line array seems to be the next step up.
Loud is also good! I like action/scifi/fantasy so the ability to go loud is important but not the main character. In practical terms almost any speaker will be loud enough for me using the Outlaw.
I have a dedicated 2-channel setup so I can make any compromises for music (as in...I don't care if it's not ideal for critical listening) although I am seeing that line arrays have fans in the 2-channel world also.
Thanks for the center channel information. I'm leaning towards the Murphy Corner Line Array as the ideal setup. It seems to be a relatively economical 5.1 solution that's also unobtrusive, which is a plus.

Yeah, I currently use line arrays for my 2 channel setup.
The Murphy array could be pretty fun for the home theater. You will REALLY want an EQ with that, or maybe a HT receiver with automatic room correction, as there will be a lot of anomalies to sort out, but I wouldn't take this as a reason not to do it.
I would also suggest that you may not really need to go floor to ceiling with the drivers in the line array (though I certainly would with the enclosure), but you should read up and make that decision for yourself.
Yes indeed Murphy recommends this equalizer:
